Margaret Frances Cruce Dutton passed away at home in Jayton, Texas, November 7, 2022, from complications from a fall.
Margaret was born December 28, 1925, on the family ranch three miles south of Billings, Montana, to Robert J. Cruce and Edith Brinkerhoff Germaine Cruce joining her brother Tom and her sister Harriet.
She attended public schools in Billings, Montana; Boise, Idaho; and Spokane, Washington. Margaret spent most of her years in Montana except for the several years when she was young in Boise and Spokane. Her family moved form Montana during the depression so her dad could sell automotive accessories and her mother worked as a cook in a logging camp. Margaret graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1943. She attended Eastern Montana College in Billings the spring and summer quarters of 1944 before marrying William Grove Dutton September 14, 1944.
They moved to the original Dutton Ranch at Sand Springs, Montana. Later they bought their ranch on the Big Dry Creek from her mother, Edith Cruce. They raised sheep and cattle for 34 years.
Bill and Margaret had two children, Roberta E. born in 1947 and William A. in 1948.
Margaret did extensive genealogy research. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed gardening and sewing. Margaret was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary #7886, and a member of the Republican Women. She lived the majority of her adult life in Montana except for the last few months when she had moved to Jayton., Texas, to live with Roberta.
She was baptized in the Presbyterian church as an adult and her Lord was important to her.
Margaret is survived by daughter Roberta (Bobby) Stanaland; son Bill (Karen) Dutton; and her grandchildren: Mary (Wayland) Pluhar; Jennifer (Darren) Pitcher; Barry (Jolene) Dutton; Robert (Marina) Stanaland; B.J. Murnion; Meghan Murphy; and Cari (Michael) Novotny; 17 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandson.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Bill Dutton, her parents Robert and Edith Cruce, her half-brother, Joseph Everett Germaine, brother Tom, and sister Harriet Wickstrom, and brother-in-law Al Wickstrom.
A very special thank you to the staff of Garfield County Health Center for the love and care given to Margaret during her five years living there.
