Margarete Rice, age 94 of Jordan passed away on Saturday, October 25 at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City.
She was born in Amburg, Germany on February 20, 1920 to Karl Perras and Rosenna Joust. After Karl’s passing she was later joined by Step Father Johan Graml, sister Centa and Brother Walter. She grew up in Amburg and later moved to Weiden where she worked in a bank and grocery store. She married Martin Zoberlein while he was home on furlough from the Army and he was killed soon after returning to duty.
Margarete loved going to the club and dancing which is where she met a handsome American Soldier named Alden Rice. This courtship lasted until 1950 when Alden was discharged from the Army and returned to the States. After a long two years of paper work Margarete was ready to start her new adventure. She boarded a ship and after 10 grueling days on rough seas she arrived in New York. She then flew to Minneapolis, MN to meet her husband to be. They were married the next day, April 6, 1952 in a small country chapel in Star Lake, MN.
After their marriage Alden and Margarete moved to Garfield County to the Dave Garber ranch where Alden was employed. Imagine growing up in the city and moving to a large ranch in the Missouri Breaks, not knowing anyone, the way of life, and not able to speak one work of english,. They later worked for Ed and Frank Kearns, Clem Larson, and the Weder Ranch. In 1957 their daughter Sonja was born.
In 1970 they moved to Jordan where Margarete cooked the next 26 years at the Dorm, Cafe, and Senior Center. She loved animals especially the little lambs in the spring time. Her hobbies were gardening and growing flowers, shopping, playing cards, and having cake and coffee with her many friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing with the little kids.
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, step father, and brother is law Rudy Krell. She is survived by her husband Alden Rice, sister Centa Krell, brother Walter (Gunda) Graml, 4 neices and nephews, daughter Sonja (Darryl) Turner, Grand Daughters Jenille (Rob)Brugger, Valerie (Leo) Murnion and eight Great Grand Children, Andrew, Ashtyn, Carson, Shane, Kanin, Liam, Savannah, and Walker.

Sonja and family,
Our deepest sympathies to you and your family. I have fond memories of your mom cooking at the dorm. I still remember Carol Kibler and I peeling potatoes (something I had never done) and she said My Got there is no potato left. You need to have Helen give you a different job. I have since learned how to peel potatoes unfortunately. She was funny, kind and strong. Those trait have been passed on to you and your girls. Please know you all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sonja and family, It is sad to see so many good people leave us, your Mother is no exception, but I am told that they go to a better place where there is no pain, hunger, or sadness. It is had to let go I know for I have had to deal with this twice. My advise is to hold on to those cherished memories because when everyone leaves that’s all that is left in your mind. Hold your family close and love them with all your heart and soul, may God be with you and your family to comfort you and yours.
Cindy Stanton says
