Marie was born on May 5, 1916 to Nels and Marie (Kohn) Nottveit in Bowman, North Dakota, the third of six children. She was raised in Marmarth, North Dakota, graduating in 1935. Marie married Charles Bertz on January 23, 1937 in Baker, Montana. To this union, two daughters, Janice Swanson and Sharon Bertz were born. Marie and Chuck lived in Marmarth, North Dakota and later Mobridge, South Dakota, moving for Chuck´s job on the railroad. Marie worked various jobs including housekeeping, cooking for the railroad men at Shorty Foreman´s and as a postal clerk. Chuck died in 1978 at which time Marie moved to Miles City, Montana to be near her daughters. After moving to Miles City, she continued to clean houses until the age of 71. At that time, she became acquainted with the Drop In Center where she enjoyed several afternoons per week playing cards with the many new friends she made there. She enjoyed spending time with family, attended her grandchildren and great grandchildren´s sporting events and spending time at the family cabin at Fort Peck. She took great pride in her beautiful yard and flowers.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors of America. Above all, she was dedicated to her family. Her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her devotion and focus in life.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chuck and her siblings, Martha Manning, Hilda Corneil, Clarence Nottveit, Margaret Bianchi and James Nottveit. Survivors include her daughters: Janice (Bob) Swanson of Miles City, MT and Sharon Bertz of Hazen, ND; her grandchildren: Rocky (Kirsten Kaufman) Swanson, Rob (Lu) Voigt, Sheila (Joel) Marshall, Shannon (Dennis) Sjomeling and Sherri Swanson. What a fun and special woman! I have so many great memories of Gramma Bertz. She was always so much fun and so funny…. a firecraker, to say the least. Indeed, the earth was blessed for 95 years.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please know that God will comfort and sustain you. Psalms 34:18 says that He is near to those broken at heart and saves those crushed in spirit. He truly knows the pain you feel. He assures us at John 5:28 that a time will soon come when we will welcome back to our arms those we have lost. Know that time is very near. Allow God to comfort your soul until that day arrives. Please keep His promises close to your heart. I offer my deepest sympathies to your entire family.

I have such fond memories of Marie. She worked in our store in Mobridge, SD. Our home was attached to the store, so I would often spend time with Marie when I was about 4-6 yrs old. Our favorite activity was playing the card game, “Go-Fish” on the floor behind the cash register. I would sit quietly while Marie happily attended to customers, knowing she was eager to return to our game:) I always enjoyed her upbeat and loving presence.
Sherry and Joe Manning says
