Marie was born in Lemmon, South Dakota on February 15, 1917, the daughter of John and Clara (Anderson) Nichelson.
She attended a country school and graduated from Lemmon High School. She taught school and worked at a bank in Lemmon before moving to Rapid City during World War II. While working there, she met Henry Dierks who was stationed there. On April 23, 1944, Henry and Marie were united in marriage in Rapid City. After his discharge they lived in Eastern Montana with four of those years being in Miles City before moving to Missoula in 1960. In 1974, they returned to Miles City where she has resided until the time of her death.
Marie was involved in many activities. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Daughter of the Nile, a member of the Beta Sigma Phi (Preceptor Rho) social sorority. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Marie was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting.
Her survivors include her daughter, Nancy Cain of Billings; her three grandchildren, Jarrod and Carrie of Billings; Jennie of Aurora, CO; her brother, Huston Nichelson of Missoula, MT; her brother-in-law and wife, Jerry and Joyce Dierks of Thermopolis, WY and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Nichelson; her husband Henry T. Dierks, and her brother, Manley Nickelson.
