Rite of Committal: will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Marilyn Furman-Smith, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at her daughter's and son in laws home here in Miles City with her family by her side. Her daughter, Dawn, and hertwo sons, as well as Debbies two sons and 6 month old great grandson were here also to spend time with her before her death. Dawn Shawda and John and Codi Erickson stayed until her death.
Marilyn was born on July 3, 1930 in Rapid City, South Dakota to parents William Fauss Bodenner and Inga Sanner. She grew up in Fairburn, South Dakota and attended school through the 10th grade in Fairburn. She then commuted by train to Rapid City, where she graduated from high school. She worked in the area until her marriage to John Jack Charles Furman on July 23, 1953 in Rapid City. The couple lived in Denver, Colorado and a couple of years later returned to Rapid City until John Jack Charles retired from his life long profession of truck driving in the late 1980s. They moved to Green Valley, Arizona, and after three years, they moved back to Rapid City, South Dakota. She remained in Rapid City after Jacks death in 1994. She then remarried toLeo Smith in 1996 and lived for a brief time in Colorado, when in 1997 she moved to Hardin, MT and made her home there. In2006,she moved to Miles City with her daughter, Debbie, making this her home. Joanne loved to shop, oil paint, read, she loved knitting and crocheting, and most of all, her family.
Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Debra (Ken) J. Cox of Miles City and Dawn (Kevin) Marie Shawda of Rapid City, South Dakota; four grandchildren, John and Grant Erickson and Justin and Scott Shawda; as well as seven great-grandchildren. Marilyn was preceded in death by one sister.
A visitation will be held Monday, April 25, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., with family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Rite of Committal will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care and kindness she and her family received through Hospice.
