On August 8th, Marjorie Carlin, passed away at St. John’s United Home in Billings, Montana at the age of 98. She was born to Nick and Dora Ohlsen on her family’s farm near Willow Lake, South Dakota on December 6, 1921. She was third of three children: brother Merle Ohlsen and sister Audrey Kreidemaker, both deceased. She lived her whole youth on the farm and graduated from Willow Lake High School. And yes she did walk to school for miles in deep snow and hot days but most of the time she road her horse. Her father always said she was his best hand and that she was always the one he could count on. Margie attended Watertown Business College in Watertown, SD and while attending worked at the local hospital in the administration office.
She married her high school sweetheart, Duane Carlin, on December 28, 1940 in Miles City, MT where Duane was working for his uncle. They made their home in Miles City until Duane left for the war. Their twin boys, Larry and Garry, were born in California while Duane was stationed there in World War Two. Shortly after their birth Duane was shipped overseas and Margie started motherhood in high gear. Eventually they would return to Miles City where she began her life as a wife and mother to three children as Joann was born ten years later.
Margie worked for over 25 years at Friendship Villa including managing the housekeeping department and as activities director. She retired from there in the early 90’s. Many years she was involved in the county elections as a poll worker. She always enjoyed working with the people and seeing people from the community voting in each election. In later years her and Duane enjoyed traveling across the country seeing new areas. They especially enjoyed visiting their and son’s and families. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Miles City. She was active in a lot of areas of the church.
Because of her upbringing Margie was always appreciative of everything she had and got. She is remembered as a sweet and fun-loving person. She was the best mother and a fun grandmother. Margie always was happy to see her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. They brought her so much joy.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Philip Duane Carlin and great grandson, Carter Powell. Margie is survived by her children Larry (Candy) Carlin of Temecula, CA; Garry (Paula) Carlin of Eagle, ID; and Joann (Rick) Powell of Billings, MT; and seven grandchildren, Chad (Robyn) Carlin, Sean (Shannon) Carlin, Anjanette (Doug) Strickler, Christie (Larry) Baker, Jeff (Sarah) Powell, Ross (Jill) Powell and Parker (Ashley) Powell and eighteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private Family Graveside services will be in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

This is a bitter/sweet occasion. Margie has not been happy since her decreased mobility and vision loss. She said that she was ready to go, but God did not want her yet. Because of her love of people and visiting, this virus was another blow for her. It is wonderful that she has been granted her wish but hard for those of us who enjoyed her presence in this world. Her family was fortunate to have her loving and caring for all of you for so many years.

Dear Larry, Garry, Joann and family, my heart goes out to you all, in your mothers passing. She was the sweetest, and kindest woman I know. She was like a second mother to me, especially since I spent so much of my esrly life at your house. She was never critical or cross with us when we acted up(?). She will always be lovingly remembered. All my love you, her and the whole family.
