Marjorie Hanes, age 94, passed away at the Powder River Manor on March 16, 2023.
Marjorie Louise (Rice) Hanes was born to Frank Rice and Frances Hayward Rice on May 20, 1928. She grew up in Powder River County, Montana. Frank and Frances ranched along the Powder River south of Broadus, MT. She and a sister, Doris Jean, lived at the ranch but then moved into Broadus to attend school – still spending summers at the ranch. “Marj” graduated from high school in Broadus in the Spring of 1946 and went on to attend Montana State College. She graduated with honors from Montana State College in the Spring of 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Her first job took her to Sidney, MT but later, she and a friend decided to move to California. So, they packed their bags and off they went. That decision turned into a lifelong adventure for “Marj”.
It was in California where she met her husband, Earl Eugene Hanes. They were married on July 16, 1960, and were together until Earl’s death in 2008. They lived in North Hollywood, CA. Earl was employed by the LA County Sheriffs Department and Marjorie worked for Pacesetter Systems, Inc. Earl retired from the Sheriffs Department in 1980 and they decided to relocate to the Reno, NV area. “Marj” continued working and commuted back and forth by flying until her retirement. She still continued bookkeeping activities for her employer, Alfred Mann, until she was in her late 80’s. Marjorie moved to spend her final years back in Broadus, MT at the Powder River Manor where she could be close to family and even a few classmates from her high school years. She always had a love for animals – especially her chickens, dogs, and cats. She loved gardening and the whole neighborhood looked forward to her tomatoes. Marjorie was actively involved with and served as a board member for the Assistance League of Reno, NV.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, stepdaughter Helen, and her sister, Doris Jean (Charley) Emmons. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Bobbie (Jon) Otis, nieces Peggy Emmons and Julie Emmons (Steve) Stoddard, and nephews Jerry (Christine) Emmons, Tom (Ann) Emmons, Barry (Marilyn) Emmons and Terry (Vicki) Otis.
Memorial donations may be sent to Assistance League of Reno-Sparks, PO Box 7376, Reno, NV 89510 in memory of Marjorie L. Hanes.

Laura Lee Ullrich says
I really enjoyed getting to know this very special lady at the Powder River Manor. She never missed church and always told me she enjoyed my message. I was saddened to learn she had passed while I was out of town. Sending sympathy to the Emmons family! Her life was truly remarkable and should be an example to us all.
