Mark William Wanner, age 61, passed away in Forsyth, Montana. Mark was born on October 26, 1959 to Dean and Connie Anderson Wanner in Honolulu, HI.
Mark’s father was an NSA agent which took them to DC, Maryland, Hawaii then Tokyo, Japan before coming back to Willmar, MN in 1975 where his parents were originally from. Mark was raised by his mother, grandma Olga and his uncle Elwood, just to name a few.
Mark had a strong work ethic and always had a job beginning at a young age when he worked for Bill & Tom’s Red Owl where he made lifelong friends. Mark excelled at football and baseball in high school. He continued to play football and baseball in college at Concordia Moorehead, MN. Mark started on the National Champion team in 1981 as fullback for the Cobbers and he pitched for the Cobber baseball team where he held the homerun record for many years.
His uncle Elwood would bring Mark to Montana for camping and backpacking trips. Mark grew to love Montana and moved to Forsyth following graduation in 1982. Mark began his 36 year teaching career and also coached football, wrestling, track, tennis, baseball along with teaching drivers ed.
Mark married Leslie Hekkel and to this union they had two sons, Chase and Sean. Mark later married Sally Beals in 1997. Together Mark and Sally found the joy of the small day to day things as well as traveling. Mark would remember the smallest details of life from vacations, traveling back to Wisconsin for Green Bay games to food dishes and sunsets. Mark (aka Mr. Fun!) looked forward to beach, sun, rum and ocean time. Mark was a foodie, and an outdoorsman whether it was fishing, hunting (with camera or gun) or being on the river with the sounds of nature.
Mark ran thousands of miles over the years building relationships with close friends, traveling over Montana to run in many races. Nothing was better than a good belly laugh for Mark.
Mark was a volunteer firefighter for both the City of Forsyth and the rural fire department of Rosebud County for decades. Mark looked forward to training with his crews and took pride in keeping safety first. The stories he could tell…
After retiring Mark kept busy with household projects, taking the girls (Dottie Mae & Honey Bee) for several rides during the day, looking for just the right recipes to cook up, continuing his decades old practice of lifting weights every Tuesday and Thursday morning, and driving for Nile Enterprises during beet harvest. So many people touched Mark’s life and he felt blessed to have so many friends that felt more like family. Mark looked forward to the many family dinners, holidays and impromptu gatherings.
Mark has lived a full life with so many adventures, memories and stories~ we are blessed.
Mark is survived by his wife Sally, sons Chase and Sean of Minneapolis, MN. Brother Eric (Sheri) Willmar, MN, parents-in-law Bob and Sylvia Beals, brother-in-law Smick Bob (Annie) Beals, many nieces and nephews.

Mere words cannot express the loss that we felt when learning about Mark. He was a joy — Mr. Personality!! He actually lived in our basement when he got to Forsyth and was looking for a place to live. We (teachers) called him Mr. P.I Magnum and loved his Hawaiian shirts. We met one of his teachers and coach from his high school years and he had good things to say about him too. What loss for all who knew him (but he left us with good memories). Our thoughts are with you, Sally, and all your family. He made his “mark” and will always be remembered.

Sally, Chase, Sean ~ The loss of Mark is devestating, and we are so very sorry for your loss. I was lucky to teach with him for 18 years and was at FHS in his earlier career. He was always friendly, wearing a big smile, and was an experienced, veteran teacher that we all could gain knowledge from. My first experience at an educator’s conference was with Mark, Big R, and 5 female teachers. We stayed in Bozeman for a week and Mark was our van chauffeur, restauranteur, and conversationalist after our day classes were over making sure the group from Forsyth enjoyed our time away. I appreciated him as a teacher to my kids, encouraging them in elementary PE to be competitive and physical, while at the same time be respectful, kind people. Kyle has made many memories with him on the Fire Dept. for almost 20 yrs and will miss his presence there as well. Mark made his ‘mark’ on so many….may you take comfort in all of your wonderful memories you have. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
