In Memory Of

Marlys Halvorson, age 77, of Terry.

December 19, 1938 – December 11, 2016

Marlys Patricia Halvorson was born on December 19, 1938 in Heimdal, North Dakota to Hans and Borghild (Ilertson) Halvorson.  Hans was an elevator manager and during her childhood she and her family lived in several small grain farming towns in North Dakota, graduating from high school in Dahlen in 1956.  In 1959, Marlys graduated from the Deaconess Hospital Nursing program in Grand Forks and received her credentials as a registered nurse.  She worked in Michigan, North Dakota at the hospital until she put her career on hold to raise her family.  Marlys married Floyd Fredrickson in 1960 and they raised four children; Cheryl, Scott, Jay and Kristi on the Fredrickson family farm.  In 1977, the family purchased a ranch near Big Timber, Montana where all four children graduated from high school.  In 1979, Marlys took refresher courses and began working part-time as a nurse at the hospital in Harlowton, Montana.  She continued her career as a nurse for the next 30 years.  Marlys worked at the hospital in Big Timber and was Director of Nursing at the Pioneer Nursing Home.  She also worked in Geriatrics and as a Psych Nurse in several other facilities in Montana.  In 1996, Marlys relocated to Las Cruces, New Mexico to be with her daughter and son-in-law and their family.  There she continued to work full and part-time as a nurse until her retirement in 2010.  For the past three years, Marlys has resided with her son on his ranch in Terry, Montana where she has been welcomed by the community and has made many friends and acquaintances.  Marlys had a tremendous contralto voice and sang for many church services, weddings, funerals, and other special occasions.  She loved all types of music and spent a portion of her last day at the Christmas concert held in Terry.  Marlys always had a zest for life and a love of people.  She never knew a stranger because there would always be a conversation and then they were her friend.  Marlys loved her family with every fiber of her being and was very proud of the accomplishments of her children.  Since relocating back to Montana, Marlys was able to watch her son, Jay coach to a state championship in football and her son, Scott coach in a state basketball tournament.  These were thrilling for her but whether the accomplishment was small or large, she was always her kids biggest fan.  Marlys was kind and generous to her family and to all those around her.  Marlys passed away at the home of her son and daughter-in-law at the Fredrickson Ranch in Terry, Montana on December 11, 2016.  She will be intensely missed by all.  Marlys was preceded in death by her infant sister Joyce, her parents Hans and Borghild, and her brother Vincent Halvorson (Judy).  She is survived by her sister Helene Pomerantz (Ed), brother Corey Halvorson (Susan), children Cheryl Graham (Tim) Scott Fredrickson (Janet), Jay Fredrickson, (Dannette), and Kristi Martin (Jim T.), 14 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of Marlys. We were childhood neighbors and friends growing up…(the Bergstrom Children). We lived and would walk across the field to each other’s place…went to school and church functions and enjoyed small towns of Blabon and Pickett, ND. I am sure Helene, you will remember, too. the years have gone by, but so many memories and I have some pictures of birthday parties with us together. God,s love to all your family. Sincerely, Marcia Bergstrom Mitzel

Hearing of Marlys’ death was such a shock! We were classmates at Dahlen High School in North Dakota. I have many good memories of fun with Marlys and others. The school was very small and there were only 5 in our class! I hadn’t seen her since our 10 year reunion as I was busy raising a family of 4 and so was she. I’m sure we could have picked up where we left off, though. My sympathy to her children and grand children. I know she will be missed!

  13. T. Kelly says

    December 23, 2016 at 8:29 am

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies. My heart goes out to the family. Death is something we will never get use to. In fact, God’s Word refers to death as an enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26). It is comforting to know that very soon our loving Heavenly Father, Jehovah, will remove death once and for all and give us the opportunity to see our loved ones again here on the earth.
