Marlys Anita Petersen died on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota of natural causes.
Marlys A. Peterson was born on April 12, 1918 the daughter of Frank R. Stewart and Della (Torbert) Stewart in Glenrock, Wyoming. She grew up on a ranch west of Rozet, Wyoming and attended the high school there. She marriedWoodrow Peterson on October 1, 1939 in Sundance, WY. They were married for 46 years until Woodrow passed away. Marlys was remarried to George Freed from 1991 to 1994. She was a teacher for 31 years,won Teacher of The Year and was also nominated several times. Marlys taught at various rural schoolsin Rozet and Moorcroft. Marlys was very active in the Presbyterian Church, Moorcroft community and held the office of President for the Chamber of Commerce. She left a great impression on all of her students. Her home was ahome away from home for everyone. She loved to travel, spending time with her family, cooking, scrap booking and crafts. Marlys was the President of the Wyoming Education Association and was proud to have served with Vice President Dick Chaney.
Marlys is survived by her four sons: Larry Petersen of Moorcroft, Wyoming; Jack (Barbara) Petersen of Battle Mountain, Nevada; Roger (Lola) Petersen ofMoorcroft, Wyoming; Greg (Debora) Petersen of Moorcroft, Wyoming; two sisters: Donna Tanner; and Doris Carlson of Gillette, Wyoming; 23 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Woodrow Petersen, second husband, George Freed, brother, Rex Stewart and sister, Beryl Stewart.
A memorial has been established, in Marlys's name to benefit the First Presbyterian Church in Moorcroft or to the Crook County Hospice.
