Mary Lou (Curtis) Davis, age 94, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Mary Lou was born in Miles City, Montana on October 12, 1918, the daughter of Owen Burt and Beatrice (Fitzgerald) Curtis. She attended Phon and Flat Creek schools east of Jordan. She grew up on horses and at the age of 7 she was checking fences for strays. She had to quit school before the 8th grade to help take care of her younger siblings. At the age of 16, she also began working for area ranchers. In October of 1938, she married Wilbur Morris “Heavy” Davis in Glasgow, Montana. Following their marriage, they purchased the Morgan Ranch at Haxby where they raised six sons. In 1962, they moved to the Tongue River where they purchased the Powellic Ranch and raised registered quarter horses and ranched there until 1985 when they moved to Miles City where they retired and made their home on Tatro. She remained there until February of 2013 when she entered Holy Rosary Extended Care.
Mary Lou loved riding and breaking horses, baking cookies, working in her yard, gardening and she loved her cats. Her greatest accomplishments were raising her six sons and writing two books, “Life On The High Plains” and “Come Ride With Me” which she wrote for her grandchildren so they knew how she was raised. She was an avid reader and was always eager to argue and teach politics. Mary Lou was a member of American Quarter Horse Association for many years.
Mary Lou is survived by four sons: Lorn (Dawn) Davis of Miles City, Les (Yvonne) Davis of West Plains, MO; Mike (Patsy) Davis of Miles City and Bruce (Linda) Davis of Escondido, CA; twenty five grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wilbur “Heavy” Davis, two sons: Bob and Pat Davis, and eight brothers and sisters: Robert, Rolly, Essie, and Walter Curtis and Jean, Lee, Margie, and Orilla Berry; and two great grandchildren.

I was stunned to learned that Mary Lou had passed. I was looking forward to another visit with her, and had some pictures laid out to bring along. What a bright little soul she was! And what a gift she has given us all through her wonderful book! My prayers are with you all.

There are so many stories I could tell about MaryLou. I so enjoyed the time when we lived next door to her. She would call us up to let us know little things, like…the garbage man is coming down the street…and I don’t see your cans out, and did you know the reason your dog was out, is the neighbor kid is going over to play with him before school? She also loved cats, anyone who knew her knew that. I adopted a big orange one, named “Bandit”, and after a while, he decided he liked MaryLou’s house better than mine, and you will still (I believe) find him sleeping over there. She encouraged me to borrow things like her electric chainsaw (which I only managed to cut myself with once), and then of course we had to use it at her house! She has a remarkable set of children, and grandchildren, who are far reaching, and wonderful! I will miss seeing her at the grocery store, and driving by every now and again, and knowing she is still there. Please accept our deepest condolences, she is truly in the arms of the Lord. May time ease the ache in your hearts, and know that we will all meet again someday!

Condolences to all of our Montana families in the passing of Ma Davis. She was a inspiration to all. She shared her family, photos, laughter, stories and popcorn with all. She had the willingness to teach frontier ways and god. She will be greatly missed.

I remember your mother well when she lived at Haxby and was good friends with my parents Bill and May Billing. They always had a good visit when they ran into each other at the 600 Cafe. How wonderful she got all her memories in a book. Our deepset sympathy to all the family. God Bless! Glen and Teena (Billing) Bollinger

To all of the Davis clan; so sorry for your loss. She was a really nice lady, always had the coffee pot on and you were always welcome. Especially when Mike and i were keeping the hawks away from her cats. I liked trying to find the hardest puzzle for her to work, she never failed to finish them. Lots of good memories from Tongue River.

It is always hard when you lose a family member even if you think you are prepared. I always liked Aunt Mary Lou and her boys. Wish I could’ve been there for the services.
