On September 9, 2020, our beloved Mokee’e (Little Woman) Magoo Mary Magdeline Shoulderblade, 73, of Lame Deer, MT and Albuquerque, NM, went to be with Maheo and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on June 14, 1947, she became the youngest natural daughter of James and Julia Shoulderblade and nurtured more than 10 children herself during her sojourn on earth. She was a librarian and caretaker of Native American history at the University of New Mexico, where she retired in 2009. Embracing the tenets of many Christian faiths, Magoo discovered herself through her worship of Jesus, whom she loved and emulated in endless service, ceaseless efforts to support loved ones and countless others that crossed her path. Her capacity to be lighthearted and live life well took her to such places as New York, Portugal, Calgary, and many other yet undiscovered places her postcards and passport hold sacred. Acting as an angelic messenger would, she followed the Holy Spirit’s direction, appearing where others’ needs were evident, turning a blind eye to her own. What we will miss most from this extraordinary lady will be the cadence of her voice as she leaves messages saying, “It’s Magoo”, her uncanny memory of birthdays, anniversaries and graduations and her unexpected attendance to them, her infectious laugh as we tease her, and especially her limitless love she so readily showed us. This “Little Woman” has keenly left an immense hole in our hearts.

Oh my friend, my sister that I almost drowned with at the Flathead Lake outside of Missoula in the summer of 1968. I did not know you were in the hospital, I am so sorry, we never got to have our coffee together like we had talked about. My brothers and sister will meet you and take care of you in Heaven. I love you and already miss you.
Leah Tom says
My Sister… Such a beautiful woman who had such calmness and quietness about her. You are in pain no more and have gone to the place of our relatives who have gone before us and welcome you to their world. You will be missed. You will be missed. My love to you…

The name Magoo Shoulderblade brought back so many memories from Ashland. Picnics, Bible School and more we shared at Laura Petter’s church, her home, The Ice Well and Crazy Head Springs. Such a long time ago and so many years have past, but a childhood friend says Rest in Peace Magoo.

Condolences to the family. Magoo was a very kind hearted person. I first met her in Albuquerque, NM, when she was working at UNM Library. She always gave me a hug. Very sad to hear of her passing. One time we ate at her place with Loretta Leone. We had a real good visit. Gonna miss her.

Memories of my buddy Magoo at Rev. Wenger’s summer youth camp outside of Ashland during the mid 60’s springs to mind, as does seeing her come into my folks’ pool hall business in Lame Deer during the summertime. It seemed she was always happy, and easy to visit with. Her brothers Windy and Tim became good buddies of mine as the years went by, but Magoo’s was the first dependable friendship from her family.
So surprised and saddened hearing of her passing. I pray to the Lord Jesus for her loved ones.
Ron Demaray and Family says
We are deeply saddened to hear of your passing. You were a good family friend and a sister to our mother Lora (Livingston) Demaray. The last couple times you visited in Billings, Alzheimers had such a grip on her that she barely recognized you. I am sure you two are rejoicing in Heaven today. You were always so kind and so full of laughter! We will pray for your family and those left behind that they will continue to hear your sweet spirit loving and encouraging them. You will be missed!

I attended Brean Academy in Elbing Ks with Magoo for 4 years during our high school years and although we never had any contact after high school I recall much laughter and good times we had as fellow classmates. I oftentimes have wondered how you were doing and what you were doing now. I am saddened to hear of your passing and look forward to seeing you again in heaven.

Dear Mom
As one of many starving UNM students who you took under your wing and nurtured, words cannot express my sadness but also my gratitude. You are the most selfless person I have ever known and personify the best attributes of a strong Native woman and mother. This is a beautifully written tribute to a beautiful woman and I agree – the soothing cadence of your voice is what I will miss most. I remember sitting on the porch two summers ago at Tamaya watching the sunset. I never imagined that would be the last time I would see you in this world but that peaceful, radiant evening is a memory I will always cherish. Until we meet again, lots of love and Merry Christmas!

I have fond and beautiful memories of Magoo when we worked together at UNM in the Department of NAS. We had great times in the library laughing and sharing stories. I will never forget our road trip to Oklahoma. We ate sunflower seeds and drank sodas as we drove in my 1986 Toyota Truck (with no air conditioning/standard drive) from Albuquerque to Oklahoma where her daughter lived. This was on my way to Madison, Wisconsin where I was going to school. And there was the time that we drove to Jemez Pueblo for feast day on November 12 with Professors Linda Tuhiwai Smith and Graham Hinganora Smith (from New Zealand). Again, in my little Toyota with three of us in the cab (Linda, Magoo, and me) and Dr. Graham in the back. We always had fun and I will cherish my memories of her and the great times we had together. I will keep Magoo and her family in my prayers. I hope to see her in the next world.
