Mathel (Springer) Jaeger was born November 9, 1915, in Florence, SD. She was the daughter of Ray and Beatrice (Van de Vere) Springer. Mathel moved with her family to the Cheyene River Reservation and settled on a farm near Timberlake, SD. Mathel was united in marriage on June 12, 1934, with Valentine Jaeger at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Timber Lake. This loving relationship endured for nearly 74 years. In 1947, Val and Mathel moved their family to Timber Lake. Together, they operated the E & J Dry Goods and Grocery Store as well as the Orpheum Theater. In 1956, they moved to Miles City, MT and purchased and operated the Gingham Lady Motel. In 1965, they constructed the Star Motel and operated this business until 1980, when they retired.
Mathel will be remembered as a great mother and provider. Occasions that brought all her children and grandchildren home were always treasured. She cooked and baked for days in preparation, and enjoyed every minute. She was proud of her family and always smiled when talking about them.
