In Memory Of

Maxine Joanne Wolf Black

September 20, 1954 – January 25, 2012

Maxine Joanne WolfBlack (cedar woman) was called home by her dad, brother, and sisters on January 26, 2012. She left this world peacefully in her home. Our beautiful loving mother, grandmother, auntie and sister was born on September 20, 1954 in Bismarck, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Oran Charles WolfBlack. She was raised by her grandmother, Rose WolfBlack. It wasn´t until her teen years, upon the death of her Grandma Rose that she went to live with her father and numerous siblings in Birney. Mom proudly spoke Cheyenne and talked often about the Cheyenne ways and traditions and above all the most important to her respecting our elders. Joanne attended and graduated from St. Labre Indian Schools in 1972 and later returned as an employee for St. Labre Guild Arts and Crafts. She then went on to further her education, earning her Bachelor´s Degree from Eastern Montana College in Billings in the late 1970´s. She also held various jobs for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. Joanne has many beautiful grandchildren that she loved very much and thought the world of. She especially enjoyed being "grandma" and being with them. She also emjoyed playing machines, being at home with her daughter Shanna, watching cartoons with Naomi Sunshine whom she lovingly called "Omi Sun" enjoying a cig, visting with family, laughing, talking about the old days, or cruising main drag in Lame Deer. Joanne´s house was often referred to as "Home" by anyone that needed a place to stay. She had a big heart when it came to family and helped anyway she could, often enduring personal sacrifices.
"Mom, Grandma, Auntie, Sister and Friend..many tears were shed when you left and many laughs and stories were told, we will miss you dearly. We take comfort in knowing you are no longer hurting and you are now at peace...you will never be forgotten and loved always"
Joanne is survived by her companion Clifford "Tuffy" Limpy of Lame Deer, her children, Greg (Sunny Rose) WolfBlack of Billings, Larry ( Dana) Monteau of Busby, Jennifer (Jeremy) Kidder of Muddy Creek, Shanna Brady and Naomi Sunshine of the family home and Rosa WolfBlack of Billings. Her grand Children Macey, Keia, Daisee, Isabelle, Naomi , Tatum, Lareah, Taye and Haven. Brothers Maynard WolfBlack and Clifton Sooktis of Lame Deer, Buster (Belle) WolfBlack of Miles City and Royal (Kim) WolfBlack of Kearns, Utah. I am sorry for your loss, of such a wonderful person. Joanne and I attended college together in Billings (EMC). She was very giving, and joyful, she truly was a good person she gave everything of herself. She has a special place with our creator, when she arrives there she will carry our love to our relatives that are there now, waiting for us to someday arrive in a good way.
