In Memory Of

Melissa McGregor, age 33, of Forsyth

June 4, 1983 – May 30, 2017

Melissa McGregor, age 33, of Forsyth, died peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 30, 2017, with her husband, Mike, and her parents, Layton and Karla Salsbery at her side. She was born in Billings, MT on June 4, 1983 and was the oldest of four sisters. She graduated from Forsyth High School in 2001, and married Mike McGregor in May of 2005. Together, they had two children, Preston (9) and Hadley (7).

Melissa’s family, friends, and community are inspired by her life, and her ability to truly live in spite of her diagnosis of cancer in 2009. She refused to allow this disease to define her. Her tenacious spirit, as well as her personal motto and mantra, “Breathe. Battle. Believe.” resonates with the many who loved, and were loved by her.

BREATHE

When faced with life’s challenges, Melissa turned towards that which she was able to control. She understood that healing occurs with mindful breathing, personal reflection and prayer. By doing so, Melissa became an unwavering example of grace while facing such adversity. She loved to travel. During one particular trip to Seattle in 2016, she laughed, walked many miles, and exuded happiness despite her pain, effects of her cancer, and side effects from treatments. She was determined to enjoy her life, no matter the circumstances, and so she did.

BATTLE

Melissa battled for what she knew to be right and true. She did so without hesitation, and did not pull punches. She lived with steadfast conviction and she (successfully) battled to instill these virtues in her children. She bravely battled her disease. She also enjoyed battling in friendly competition; sports, board games, and card games (especially Whist, Bunko, Cribbage and others). If her family didn’t accept an invitation to play, she would often joke, “Why? Are you afraid you’re going to lose?” With her playfulness, she was known as someone who brought people together, joked, shared experiences, and created memories. She created joy wherever she went.

BELIEVE

Melissa believed in herself. She believed in her husband Mike, and the strength of their marriage. She believed in her children. She had high expectations of them, but was also fair and nurturing. She beamed with pride over Preston’s wit, charm, and attitude, and Hadley’s humor, determination and spunk. She believed in her faith, in Jesus Christ, and in her church. She did not believe in coincidence, as reflected in an important book to her, Squire Rushnell’s, “When God Winks.” Where others may have seen obstacles, Melissa saw opportunities. She was optimistic and unafraid of failure. Thus, she had many successes with her small business adventures, all of which were founded on a premise of helping and bettering others.

Ultimately, her life seemed to be a pattern of selflessness and fostering genuine relationships with those who were lucky enough to call her their daughter, sister, grand-daughter, cousin, friend, hairstylist, health coach and consultant, clothing retailer and so on. Because of her genuineness, people confided in her and trusted her. With her passing, she left a feeling of void in the many who knew her. They will reminisce, revere and miss her for years to come. Her legacy will be one of courage, conviction, and placing the needs of others above one’s self. It will also be a testament to always finding some enjoyment, no matter the circumstances. In fact, one of her last wishes she expressed to her husband was for him to “throw a big party!” She felt that life was worth celebrating.

Melissa’s life, most certainly, is.

Melissa was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Dorothy Salsbery; aunt, Tammy Sorenson; uncle, Kevin Salsbery; cousin, Mark Slade and brother-in-law, Ed Stanhope.  She is survived by her devoted husband Mike; children, Preston and Hadley; parents, Layton and Karla Salsbery; three sisters: Miranda (Colin) Fitterer, Meagan (Josh) Martin and Margo Salsbery; grandparents, Harold and Elsie Sorenson; mother and father-in-law, Bill and Kay McGregor; four sisters-in-law, Angel Stanhope, Andrea (Kevin) Martin, Kelly McGregor and Bonnie (Derek) Braun; and one brother-in-law, Scott (Jill) McGregor.  Melissa was adored by numerous nieces and nephews.

My heart hurts for all of you. As I heard of Melissa’s passing I took a moment to myself. Thinking I was alone I let myself feel for a moment. My little Baylie came in the room, and gave me a hug. I had to break the news that her friends had lost their mommy. To this she hugged me a little tighter and said, “Melissa is the lucky one.” Oh, how right she is. God is good even when it hurts, and so lucky is she to get to be pain free in his kingdom. Our Prayers for peace are with you at this difficult time. We Love you!!

I had the pleasure of working with Melissa when her talent was a salon owner and stylist. She was so good at making her clients beautiful. I certainly missed seeing her but her priorities shifted when she took on this battle. She fought hard and heaven welcomes a BEAUTIFUL soul. My condolences to Melissa’s Family and Friends.

I am so sorry for all of your loss. Melissa was a nice person and always seemed to have a smile. She was one of the lucky few who had their “shit together” and knew what she wanted out of life. She will be missed by everyone who knew her, especially her family. I am sorry to have missed the funeral: however, I am in Sheridan taking care of our son’s pets while he is at training. I do the clock for the Bozeman High School Volleyball games and whenever a back row player hits the ball I think of Melissa and how amazing she was at those back row hits/kills, and just how amazing she and your family are. Like so many I will carry happy memories of the best back row volleyball player to every grace the floor.
