Mildred Vernon Fieldgrove was born December 17, 1904 to W.D. and Hallie (Rickerson) Saunders in Milligan, Nebraska, the only daughter with five brothers. The family moved several times during her childhood when her father and her uncle set up new lumber companies in different towns in Nebraska, Montana, and Wyoming. Mildred graduated from high school in Billings, Montana. She moved to Gillette, Wyoming in 1922 and taught in a rural school for a short time. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, graduated with honors from the Chillocothe Business School and received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Mildred worked with her brothers and her father in the Saunders Lumber Company in Gillette as their bookkeeper for many years until she met the love of her life, Charles Fieldgrove. They were married in 1957 and she became a ranchers wife and helper. In 1969, they retired from the ranch and moved into Gillette to be caregivers for Mildreds mother until her death. Charlie loved to drive his team of Belgian Clydesdale cross horses pulling a wagon in parades and Mildred would ride with him in parades around Wyoming and surrounding area.
Mildred was a member of numerous organizations including Gentian Chapter Eastern Star, VFW Auxiliary, Rebecca Lodge, Chapter V, P.E.O., Presbyterian Ladies Circle, to name a few. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was the second lady to serve as an Elder, a deacon, she sang in the choir, and taught junior high school girls Sunday School for many years.
Mildred never met a stranger and was known as a great storyteller and loved to visit. Her home was always open to anyone for a meal or to spend the night and a place where family and friends loved to gather for a good time and such occasions were frequent.
She is survived by two stepsons, Cecil Fieldgrove of Buffalo ad Pat Cusick of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, one stepdaughter, Gwendolyn Barney of West Valley, Utah, nine grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. She was the favorite Aunt to thirteen nieces and nephews. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her five brothers: Bob, Dan, Don, Hank, and Walt Saunders and nephew Bill Saunders.
A memorial of one's choice in Mildreds name is suggested. Condolences may be sent to Stevenson Funeral Home 210 W. 5th Street Gillette, WY 82716 or via the internet at www.stevensonandsons.com
