Monte Cato Little Coyote Medicine, “Winged Horse Owner” (Votoneve’hamehe), age 52 of Lame Deer, was greeted by his relatives at Sunset on July 4, 2015 on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He was there helping bring back his niece and her 3 children. They got hit by a drunk driver while returning home.
Sunrise for Monte was on August 7, 1962 in Crow Agency, MT. Monte is the son of Chief Perry Little Coyote and Emma Jean Biglefthand Little Bear. He came from a long line of Chief’s from both of his parent’s families.
Monte was baptized in the Catholic Church, which he attended weekly. He attended school in Ashland at St. Labre Catholic School, where he graduated in May 1981. Later on, he attended college at Chief Dull Knife Memorial College in Lame Deer. He also went to Custom Diesel Truck Driver Training in Omaha, Nebraska, to which one of his occupations was attributed. In Chicago, Illinois, he was trained in Accident Investigations for his career in Law Enforcement. He had many jobs including a truck driver, bus driver, tribal policeman, helicopter jet-fuel transporter, security guard, a seismograph troubleshooter, and many other things throughout his years.
Monte married Kimberly Hiwalker and to this union 2 children were born, Desarae and Monte, Jr. They later divorced and he was later married again to Donna Littlewolf. This union brought twin daughters: Harmony and Hailey, who both preceded him in death in 1987.
Monte enjoyed visiting with his friends and his family. He was a family man and loved spending time with his grandsons, Destind Tron, Champion Max and Nicholas Gavin. He especially loved watching cartoons with his grandsons. His dogs, Trucker and Domino, were like his children. He would take them with on the road when he drove truck. He was also a part of the Chief Society and participated in Gourd Dancing and was a Swift Hawk Sundancer.
Monte is preceded in death by his parents: Perry Little Coyote and Emma Biglefthand Little Bear; paternal grandparents: Chief Hailman and Martha Little Coyote of Oklahoma; maternal grandparents: Raypheal and Ruth Biglefthand of Lame Deer, Montana; and his two daughters Harmony and Hailey.
Monte is survived by his children: Monte, Jr., and Desarae Little Coyote; his grandchildren: Makenzie Sophia, Nicholas Gavin, and Ally Dawn Little Coyote; Destind Tron, and Champion Max Marquez; one brother, Allen Ray (Elizabeth) Little Coyote; niece Allarie Little Coyote; grandson Tylen James Poitra; one sister Judy Tall Bull of Lame Deer; grandson Chris Tall Bull and children. He is also survived by his grandmother Maretha Charette of Busby; aunties: Nancy Fighting Bear of Birney, Myrna Burgess and Ruby Sooktis of Lame Deer, and Karen Little Coyote and Racheal Cole of Oklahoma; his uncles: Clifton Sooktis of Billings, Vernon Sooktis and Silas (Alice) Biglefthand of Lame Deer, Perry (Ella) Fighting Bear of Ashland; extended family and friends that he took as his brothers and sisters; also numerous nieces and nephews throughout all of Montana, Wyoming, and Oklahoma.
A Traditional Wake will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday July 9, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish in Lame Deer. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am on Friday July 10, 2015 at the same location with Rite of Committal to follow in the Alison Bixby Memorial Gardens in Lame Deer.
