Nancy Jane Hartman Jarvis, age 82, of Glendive, passed away after a short illness on December 19, 2023 at her home surrounded by family.
Nancy was born in Livingston on February 12, 1941. As a child they moved to Portland, OR due to the war. From there her travels came back to Montana. Spending time in Cooke City, where her dad built a cabin, shortly after he brother was born. Then they moved to Billings following her father’s work. She attended school until she was 15. Due to her father’s illness and health the family moved back to Livingston where she attended high school. She worked at Chico Hot Springs during the summer months and would also waitress in Livingston.
After high school she joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in Quantico, Virginia, receiving rank of lance, corporal and working in the war office. Upon discharge she moved to Los Angeles, California and was living there with her aunt and uncle. She started working at Zodie’s Department store. There she met a fellow worker that was just out of the Air Force. Within time they became husband and wife and moved to Livingston, Montana, starting a new life with their baby son Paul in tow. After Nancy’s husband Don started working for the railroad, they were able to start their home in Livingston. Nancy obtained a job at the library and was head librarian of the children’s departments. During that time, she was blessed with their daughter, Desiree. Nancy loved to cook and make her own recipes. She loved to garden and can her own foods. She also loved to go camping, hunting, and fish. She spent time with her children doing projects. Nancy was a 4H leader and loved the fair. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and was a deacon for many years. She loved teaching Sabbath School to the children and having home study groups at her home kitchen table. In 1986 the railroad closed in Livingston, Nacy and her family moved to Glendive where Done continued working for the Railroad until his retirement. During this time Nancy went to school at Dawson Community College, taking general studies. She continued her cooking and gardening, and exploring the country roads, looking for fossils and agates.
Nancy is survived by her son Paul (Kim) Jarvis of Glendive; daughter Desiree (Tracy) Gackle of Brockway; sister Maxie Hartman-Young of Glendive; nephews John J. Hartman, Jeremiah Hartman and other nieces and nephew.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Donald L. Jarvis; father Malcolm Max Hartman; mother Pearl Lucille Hartman Ayers; step father Clarence Ayers; brother John Max (Alice) Hartman and brother in law David T. Young.
A memorial service for Donald & Nancy will be held on January 28th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 109 Clay St., Glendive, MT.
Interment will be held at Shorthill Cemetery in Livingston, MT at a later date.
