In Memory Of

Nancy Luther, age 73, of Miles City.

May 15, 1939 – March 25, 2013

Nancy C. Luther 73, of Miles City, MT passed away March 25, 2013 at the Holy Rosary Healthcare Center.

Nancy was born May 15, 1939 in Silesia, MT to Henry Stoddard and Florence (Sweeny) Stoddard.  She had 2 sisters (Patty, Sharon) and 6 brothers (Chuck, David, Teddy, Bill, Frank and Michael).  Nancy attended North Park and Senior High schools in Billings and became a lifelong avid reader and learner with a very broad knowledge base.  Some of Nancy’s favorite childhood memories were climbing the rimrocks with her siblings in Billings and working at the soda fountain at Stockman Cafe and at Ideal Bakery in Billings. She appreciated her Grandma Kiser for being there for her during her growing up years.  She married George Luther Sr. on August 9, 1958 at Hardin, MT.  Together they ranched on Sarpy Creek east of Hardin before moving to Sweeny Creek southeast of Rosebud. They had four children: George Jr., Darell, Terese, and Cory. Her kids have numerous happy memories growing up on the ranch with their parents.  She loved reading passionately and delighted in leaving bags of books with others or just on their doorsteps. She loved crocheting, local history, and genealogy.  She dedicated time, assistance, and information to the Rosebud County Museum along with working on Custer County history and genealogy.  She practically knew every cemetery in Montana and had a habit of wanting to stop and check out names while travelling or occasionally getting her children or relatives to.

Nancy enjoyed anything that involved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild including plays, programs, sports, paintball, or just watching them play or visiting.  She loved to mow hay on the ranch with the Ford tractor until they bought a swather and then enjoyed it even more.  She had a horse that bucked off one son all the time, she had the ability to get on the horse and ride off with no problems.  She loved flowers and to garden.  It delighted her when spring came with the wild sweet peas, which George and the kids picked an abundant supply for the house.  She cared about everyone more than herself and spent many hours writing letters and emailing family and friends.  She enjoyed reconnecting with her siblings during her middle years, loved to work cattle; even if it was at the gate; and collected dolls and loved spending time with dear friends

Nancy is survived by her husband, George Sr. of Miles City, MT; her children:  George Jr. (Katrina) and their children Trevor (Kim) and Travis all of Miles City; Darell (Tammy) and their children Teal and Callie of Rosebud; Terese Luther and her children Charlie (Celeste) of Nebraska, Katie (Jess) of Rosebud,  and Emily Pitkin of Miles City; Cory of Rosebud and his daughter Anna (Mark) and great grandson Kory of Miles City and Jodee Kuden of Alaska; a sister, Sharon Larson of Louisiana; sister-in-law, Delores Luther of Hardin; special cousin, Jack Frantal of Great Falls; and many beloved nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Chuck, Teddie, David, Bill, Frank, and Michael Stoddard; and sister, Patty Hayden.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home followed by a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City.  Rite of Committal will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veteran’s Cemetery.  Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.  Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonandsons.com.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

She was kind, loving and generous. What a glorious time to enter Heaven, during the Easter season! Because Christ is Risen we know that Nancy will be there too. God Bless you all.

    March 28, 2013 at 1:43 pm

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Nancy Luther. May you find comfort in your happy memories and in remembering the fine qualities you recall of Mrs. Luther. Please know that God promises to be, “near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalm 34; 18) Our loving Creator has promised to soon “swallow up death forever…and wipe the tears from all faces.” (Isaiah 25; 8) Please look forward to the joy of again seeing Mrs. Luther in perfect health in Paradise conditions which was initially promised in regard to the Earth (Genesis 1:31). Faith in these promises will hopefully ease the pain of loss. Meanwhile we have the opportunity to follow Jesus’ instruction to continue to take in Bible knowledge that leads to everlasting life (John 17:3).

George Sr, George Jr, Darell, Terese, Cory and family, I don’t have the words to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. So, I will say it in a favorite poem of mine by Sheila Pearce. “I’m Not Gone”
Don’t cry for me now that I’m free. Just look around anywhere and that’s where I’ll be. For I am the daylight when the sun starts to rise. I’m the bright rainbow you see in your eyes. I’m the peaceful summer breeze that flows softly through the trees. I’m the bluebird in the sky, that sings with such ease. Yes, I’m happy, so happy to be free. Understand my family and don’t cry for me. God Bless you all

I am a writer living in PA. Nancy and I had been pen pals for several years, and she was so helpful in my research about Rosebud County. We corresponded about our lives, our families, and I always enjoying hearing about all things Montana. I’m at loss thinking that I will never be able to reach across the country again to chat with such a kind, sweet, knowledgeable lady. Blessings to her family, with my sincerest condolences.
