How does one start a life summary of a cherished member of the family? With a prayer and with gratitude. Nathan had many roles in this life as a son, brother, nephew, uncle, father, grandfather, companion and friend. To many of us he was Nate or NateDawg. The first time I met Nate he was running down the hill from his house to raise hell with JP as we were leaving to the swimming pool. I remember hoping that he would keep his attention on JP and not decide to start picking on me to. It was several more years before we actually started hanging out, We were in the 4th and 5th grade when we started to develop our friendship.
What I remember from our childhood together is how much his brothers – Kenny and Leland – and sisters – Malinda and Sedonia always looked out for him. I remember before Youtube, Facebook, Xbox, and Playstation, we had the hills around Lame Deer to climb and creeks to run through. I remember John, Tony, Calvin, Larold, Johnny, McClay, Jerome, Baby Joe, and others that I can’t remember out right that were all at one time or another a part of the adventures and experiences that made growing up in that age such a special time.
As we got older our focus turned toward playing ball. In the summers – Nate, Amos and I would always show up at Lame Deer school’s outdoor courts an hour before everyone else showed up to play basketball and then we would be the only ones there still shooting around after everyone left for the evening. Recently, I was talking with another friend, Pat, and he said, “Do you remember that crazy baseline move, Nate would use over and over and no one could stop it?” it was funny because before he mentioned it, I was thinking of that same move.
Another thing that will always stand out for me when I think of Nate is music, Nate always had to have his music, if he wasn’t watching videos then he would have something playing in the background – he stuck pretty much with metal but was once in a while would be swayed by a good ballad from an un-metal band. He would attend all the concerts he was able to from big concerts at the Metra to smaller ones at the clubs around Billings.
For most of us the transition from youth to adulthood on the rez, meant you became a wildland firefighter. One memory that I will never forget – we were fighting a fire on the rez and Nate was in front of me in line and our crewboss – Paul Littlehead told Nate, “Go shade everybody up and wait until I get back.” So Nate led all of us over to this big pine tree and everyone sat down. While I was talking to Nate he jumped up, yelling about being stung. Right when I started laughing at him, I got stung right in the back of the head and then I could hear everyone else yelling and cussing about bees. It turned out that he sat us all down right beneath a hornet’s nest.
Years went by and we lost contact for a while. During this time, I heard that Nate had two girls and then later on a boy and after that two more girls. We came back into each other’s lives when his son, Tristan was just starting to talk. Nathan was so proud of him and would brag about how smart he was and how Tristan was able to tell when someone wasn’t feeling good and would comfort them. Nate was with me when I lost my mother and I was there for him when he lost his. I know that the past few years were very hard on Nate. The loss of his mother, Arvelos, was especially hard for him but he went on in the best way that he could. The challenging thing to mention is that Nate liked his alcohol and although this might not be a popular viewpoint, he lived the way that he wanted to. I believe that he never intentionally wanted to hurt anyone. In the end Nathan was surrounded by people that loved him. We are witnesses to the life of Nate, through the stories we have of him, the laughs that we shared with him and the tears that we now share because of him.

The end of an era. I have so many memories of Nathan growing up because he was our neighbor in West Side and my classmate at Lame Deer Junior High. We were the first class to move into the new Allen Rowland gymnasium and our classes were in the new building, with a brand new gym, new locker rooms. We thought we were so cool! Nate was always pretty quiet, but he was always a gentleman. I remember our 8th grade graduation song was Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue, because you know, we were so cool. My heart is so sad for Nathan’s family. He was always a friendly guy with a quiet nature and a gentle smile. Rest in peace my friend, you’ve left a lot of broken hearts but you are no longer in pain. Sending my condolences and prayers to all of Nathan’s loved ones in your time of grief.
