Nellie Iris Johnson, age 95, of Jordan, MT passed away at the Garfield County Nursing Home on March 6, 2018.
Nellie was born on February 3, 1923 in Jordan, MT. She was the daughter of Edwin & Elizabeth (Stockton) Stinebaugh. In her younger years she attended country school at the North Star Elementary School. She graduated from Garfield County High School in 1942. After high school she moved in with her older sister Shirley who she helped babysit. In 1946 she moved back to Jordan where she met Earl Johnson and on March 21, 1949 they were married in Miles City, MT. To this union they had four children Gary, Robert, Penny and Edwin. In 1956 the family moved to town where Earl began working and Nellie stayed home to tend to the children. She eventually began doing small jobs and various volunteer work around Jordan some of her favorites were volunteering at the Senior Center, working at the museum and cleaning for her Church. After Earl passed in 1997 she continued doing volunteer work and lived on her own until 2010 when due to health reasons she moved into the Garfield County Nursing Home.
Nellie was an avid gardener and also loved raising flowers. She enjoyed baking and always had entries to put into the fair. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nellie truly loved living in Jordan and rarely left town unless it was to visit family or the occasional doctor’s visit.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; parents, Edwin and Elizabeth Stinebaugh; one son, Gary Johnson and one great-grandson, Jerid. She is survived by her children, Robert (Sheila) Johnson of Jordan, MT; daughter, Penny (Eddy) Awberry of Kuna, ID; son, Edwin (Sherri) Johnson of Helena, MT; six grandchildren, Kistia Golie, Kristopher Johnson, Crystal Belcourt, Evelyn Woods, Mathew Johnson, Erin Johnson and five great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson and Son’s Funeral Home in Jordan, MT. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the VFW Hall in Jordan. Interment will be at the Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan. Should friends desire condolences can be made to the family by visiting stevensonandsons.com. Memorials can be made to Garfield County Ambulance Service or to a charity of ones choice.
