Norma L. Gallinger Hoverson passed away peacefully from this life in Billings, MT on March 18, 2017 at the age of 83. Mom was born May 3, 1933 to Helen Ruth Viall and Clarence Elwood Gallinger in Jordan, MT. The family moved to Fromberg, MT in 1935 when the Fort Peck Dam was put in and flooded the family homestead in Garfield County. Mom went to school in Fromberg until age 15, when her father died in 1948. The family then moved back to Jordan, where she graduated from high school in 1951 and was married to Melvin Hoverson. They had six children and later divorced. Mom worked hard against great odds to raise her family. She retired after many years as Garfield County Assessor in 1999. Mom had a great mind and a thirst for knowledge, thus her addiction to books and crossword puzzles. She was never without a book and read up to her last days. After we were all raised Mom took time to travel with friends. They had great adventures and our sister Jane was able to take some of these trips as well. After retirement when Mom began to experience some health issues, she moved to Billings to be closer to family and medical help. These were great years! We had so much fun and enjoyed a lot of quality family time.
Mom is survived by daughter in law Cyndi Reichenbach and family, Amberlyn (Josh) and Cade, Sarah Ruth, Beth (Destry) Brooks and Cruise, Paul Jr. (Allison) Gage and Graycen; daughter Halle (Duncan) McDonald and family, Donald (Amber) Trevor, Alex, Grace, Duncan and Maggie, Scott (Mega) Drew, Donald and Dalilah; daughter Laurel (Charles) Noland and family, Tony O’Connor, Roberta and boys, Derek, Darius and Brighton, Brian (Kathy), Stacy (Andy) Jaxen and Kyann, Becky (Pat) Dalton and Lorelei; daughter Sally Hoverson and family, Sarah (Dwayne) Baylee and Jaylyn, Portia (Shane) Bella and Sophia; Son Glen Hoverson and family, Lexie (David) Madisyn, Grace and Wyatt, Douglas (Sarah) Hannah and Hattie, and Kaci (Brian).
She is also survived by four sisters in law, Mimi Gallinger, Jackie Gallinger, Martha Edsall and Dorothea Hoverson, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bobby, Art and Glen, her beloved children Paul and Jane, son in law Bob O’Connor and daughter in law Cindy Hoverson.
Following mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan, MT. A luncheon will follow at the VFW where she was a lifelong member. Memorials in Norma’s honor may be made to the Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan. Sending prayers and thoughts to the Hoverson family. Growing up, Norma’s hard work and nice family were just accepted, now as a parent I know the challenges she faced as a single mom and hard working provider for the family. I don’t remember her ever complaining, just a competent straight forward person. Kudos to you and your life, Norma. Your children rise up and call you blessed!
