In Memory Of

Norman William Shannon, age 76, of Terry

April 14, 1941 – October 23, 2017

Norman William Shannon, age 76, of Terry passed away October 23, 2017 at Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.

Norman was born April 14, 1941 to Otis (Beanie) Shannon and Alice Olsen Shannon in Dupree, South Dakota. He attended school in Dupree graduating from Dupree High School in 1959. On Thanksgiving Day, 1959 Norman came to Broadus, Montana with a truck load of horses for his brother-in-law, Voyle Samuelson. His plan then was to unload the horses and go back to South Dakota but, because of a snow storm, ended up spending the winter at the Samuelson Ranch. He never did make it back to South Dakota to live.

On June 2, 1962 Norman married Vera (Vonnie) Steadman in Broadus. He worked at various jobs until the spring of 1969 when a snow storm hit and he started working for Tongue River Electric Coop as a lineman. In August 1969 Norman, Vonnie and Randy along with a dog, cat and a horse moved their trailer house to Terry, Montana where he continued working for TRECO until he retired 37 years later in 2006. Scott was born after the move.

He was a member of the Broadus and Terry Jaycees, a Terry volunteer fireman, a Town of Terry councilman and for many years helped with the Prairie County Fair in the livestock division.

Norman spent his life enjoying his kids and grandkids and traveling to the four corners of Montana to their sporting events. He and Vonnie attended the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas for 20 years. Norman never knew a stranger and made many friends from his travel to Las Vegas, to South Dakota, to his work with TRECO. Norman had a great love for horses and could always select a good one. He was always proud of his grey and paint horses, especially the one grey mare that taught all four of his grandkids to ride.

Norman is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Phillip Shannon, Sturgis, SD and Roy Shannon, Volborg, MT; sisters Stella Vance Stave, Rapid City, SD and Audrey Holmes, Dupree, SD; brothers-in-law, Voyle Samuelson, Wayne Vance and Wayne Holmes.

Surviving Norman is his wife of 55 years, Vonnie; sons, Randy (Aletta), Broadus, MT and Scott (Kristy), Terry, MT. Grandchildren, Tyrel Shannon, Savage, MT, Tell Shannon, Sheridan, WY, Randee Shannon and Travis Shannon, Miles City, MT; sister Virginia Samuelson, Broadus, MT; brother Robert (Kim) Shannon, Dupree, SD and sister-in-law Betty Shannon, Sturgis, SD along with many nephews and nieces in South Dakota and Montana.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry with burial following in the Prairie County Cemetery in Terry.
