Olive Winegar Campbell was born in Ellensburg, WA on Dec. 12, 1909 to James and Clara Meinecke Winegar, the third of eight children. The family moved to Buhl, Idaho when Olive was four years old. One of Olive’s best memories of her early years in Buhl was racing her pony, always defeating the neighbor kids who thought they had a fast horse.
After completing her schooling in Buhl, Olive bobbed her hair, learned to dance the Charleston, and went off to college. She graduated from Graceland College in 1930, and then moved to Montana where she taught at Iron Springs School. During that year she met and married Orville Campbell.
Olive and Orville farmed on Sarpy Creek for several years before moving to Hysham and Pease Bottom. Olive was active in Hysham Community Presbyterian Church, Women’s Club, Senior Citizen’s Council, and many other civic organizations.
Olive was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Orville, three brothers, four sisters, and two grandchildren.
Olive is survived by her children Barbara Coyle, Newport, Oregon; Walter (Edna) Campbell, Wichita, Kansas; Bob Campbell, Bozeman, Montana; David (Judi) Campbell, Salem, Oregon; 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren. Even with so many she never forgot a birthday or anniversary!
Olive would like to be remembered for her Parker House rolls and white fudge, as well as being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Olive believed it was important to help those in need, to be active in the community, and to do so with grace and compassion.

Known by me forever and always as “Auntie Olive,” Olive was one of the sweetest and most beautiful people who ever walked the face of the earth. I’m going to miss her so very much. I talked myself out of going to see her on her 105th birthday because I believed her family wanted it to be more of a personal gathering for her immediate family; that is, for Barbara, Walter, Bob, David and their families, even though Bob told me I was family and that I was welcome. Of course, now I’m really sorry that I didn’t go. I loved her so very much. Although I’m selfishly sad, Aunt Olive, I’m happy for you. You have finally reaped your reward in Heaven and have joined once again with Uncle Orville. I’ll look forward to seeing both of you again in the not too distant future. Barbara, Walter, Bob and David, find comfort in knowing she is comfortable now and is rejoicing with the man she loved in the presence of Jesus.

What a loss to her family and many friends in Treasure County, and what a ‘treasured’ member of the community she was for many decades. Olive was a beautiful woman in all ways. Orville and Olive leased and then purchased our Gibb farm at Rancher, and I remember them later sitting in our Hysham living room as Orville recited his personal story of the last man hanged in Treasure County. The two of them had an amazing life-long partnership. My husband Ric Tieman and I were able to attend Olive’s wonderful 103rd birthday celebration at the Community Center, where she was sparkling as usual. We are unfortunately out of the country now and unable to attend her services on Tuesday the 10th, but our thoughts are with Barbara, Walter, Bob, David and their families as they celebrate Olive’s wonderful life. God bless you all.

What a shining example, of all that is good, Olive has been to so many of us for a long time. I selfishly wanted her around for a much longer time, but she deserves her reward. God bless her family, whom she loved without reservation! Our condolences, Gail and Ron Kolb

The Hysham community has lost a wonderful member with Olive’s passing. She remained ever-present in all that went on and brought with her a spirit that energized those around her. We were so fortunate to take part in her 103rd birthday celebration and witness once again her sharp mind and insight. She will be missed by all. We send out thoughts and prayers to be with all her immediate and extended family at this sad time. We are, unfortunately in Mexico, and will not be able to join the community in the memorial service.

Aunt Olive always had a ready smile for everyone. I’ll always remember her as a sweet lady who always called me “Jimmy.” I think I never did grow up in her eyes. She and Uncle Orville were two of the finest people God put on this earth. I know everyone will miss them both, but I also am very sure there are many smiles in heaven because they are there. My sincere condolences to the family.

A true lady….Aunt Olive always had kind words, the sweetest of people. No matter the history, she always spoke gently. You were always included in anything going on, you were always welcome. I so remember the family get together’s in her and Orville’s yard. She will definitely be missed by so many. I am so glad that God shared her with us for a bit longer than most. We were all so blessed to have had her in our lives…..

What a loss to her family and all of us with “roots” in Pease Bottom and Treasure County. She was a true “Pillar of Heritage” to all of us she helped raise in Hysham and along the Yellowstone. Orville and Olive were great mainstays of our community. Our prayers and condolences go out to Barb, Walter, Bob, Dave and their families, but we all know that Olive and Orville are reunited in a better place. May the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be with all of you and grant you peace.
