Onie May Root, age 73, of Miles City passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.
Onie was born in Childers, Texas on March 1, 1930, the daughter of Horace and Bessie (Williams) Cain. At the age of two, she moved to the Volborg area where the family ranched. She attended school at the Loesch Country School. Following her schooling, she worked for her sister Mert as a dispatcher at the cab company in Miles City. Onie then worked at the Airport Cafe. She then married Ben Root on May 1, 1954 in Miles City, Montana where she became a homemaker, raising four children. She later worked at the Miles City Laundry for seven years then began dispatching for Kenny Stabler at the Miles City Cab Company. Onie enjoyed hunting and fishing with Ben. She enjoyed listening to music, gardening, embroidering, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren. She had a great interest in the history of this area. Onie was a member of the Ranger Riders Reps. and years ago she was a 4- H Leader for ten years
Onie is survived by her husband Ben of Miles City, MT; a son, Mike Root and his wife Donna of Fargo, ND; two daughters, Betty Hoskins of Miles City, MT and Beverly Williams and her husband Jerry of Miles City, MT; a brother, Tat Cain of Miles City, MT; two sisters: Ruth Hagen of Miles City, MT; and Edith Cook of Miles City, MT; seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Art in 1984, seven brothers, and four sisters.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 12, 2003 in the chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.stevensonandsons.com.
