On the evening of June 4, 2023, Patricia (Pat) Joan Cadieux Schilling passed away at the Prairie County Hospital/Nursing Home in Terry, Montana. She was surrounded by a daughter and her son. Pat was 95 years old.
Pat was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on October 18, 1927. She was the sixth child of eleven children, born to Kenneth Cadieux and Amy Simmons Cadieux. Pat liked to talk about growing up in a large family. Her father was killed in a railroad yard accident when she was 9-10 years old. She talked about caring for her younger siblings. She grew up in a loving devoted Catholic household. Her religious faith was very strong and an important part of her life.
Pat got her 2-year teaching certificate that started a very satisfying career of helping students learn for many many years. Later in her career she went back to college and completed her teaching 4-year credentials. In 1948-49 she accepted a teaching position in Terry, Montana. In her second year of teaching in Terry (1949-1950) she met her future husband, Ervin Schilling. They were married on June 19, 1950, in Jamestown, North Dakota. To this union the 4 J’s were born- Jean in 1951, Jane in 1952, Joan in 1955, and Jerome in 1960. The family all worked together on the farm/ranch. With all the work that needed to be done Pat was always ready for the job. She especially liked fixing fence and harvest time.
Pat’s life was very full as she was always busy doing things and helping others. She is remembered for her sewing skills making many garments. She made Christmas and Easter dresses for her young daughters. Pat also made flower girl dresses, pep club outfits, and patched too many pairs of jeans to count. She sewed like she drove – pedal down and straight ahead.
The Mildred Busy Bees 4-H club, Fallon Homemakers, Sacred Heart Alter Society, and the local card clubs (Pinochle) always found a willing participant with Pat around. Pat was an avid reader and always had a book going. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and word searches. Rummy, Uno, Pinochle were her go to card games. If she could round up 4 players there was sure to be a hot game of Pinochle. She was always sought after as a partner in cards. She was a very sharp card player – out for blood to win.
Pat and Ervin enjoyed many retired years traveling in their motor home. They went south to Arizona & California, for warmer winter months. Their travels often meant meeting up with family and friends, new and longtime friends. They spent 66 years together until Ervin passed away in 2016.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband Ervin, daughter Joan Pisk, daughter in law Julie Schilling, her parents Kenneth & Amy Cadieux, and all but 2 of her siblings.
Pat is survived by daughters Jean (Kent) Brubaker of Missoula, MT, Jane Schilling of Terry, MT, and son Jerome Schilling of Shepherd MT. Grandchildren Justine (Carl) Laumeyer, Amber Murr, Dane (Jenny Smith) Brubaker, Fabian (Cari) Pisk, Jimmy (Lynn) Schilling and Jaimi (Scott) Murray. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren: Walker Laumeyer, Logan, Sidney & Griffin Murr, Hailey, Landon, & Sienna Schilling, Braeden Pisk, Witten & Cameron Murray, and Aspen & Adelyn Brubaker. Bob and Dick Cadieux are her two surviving siblings.

Pat was Larry’s second grade teacher, and he always remembered her fondly. She always had a smile and a cheery word. I also remember her laugh. She seemed like a very upbeat and happy person. Easy to be around. We’re keeping all the family in our prayers.

Our thoughts and prayer are with all of you. I remember Aunt Pat from the time she first moved to Terry! My friends and I were always asking her to take her thumb off. She had a special knack and way to do that trick!
