Patricia “Patti” Childers, 64, of Pierre, South Dakota, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Patti was born to Dan H. and Rita (Schumacher) Root on October 17, 1948 in Miles City, MT. She grew up physically and emotionally close to her paternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family. Patti began her work life at an early age, babysitting to earn for herself that perfect Jantzen bathing suit that she wanted so much. She subsequently became a small business owner, embarking on endeavors such as Hatch’s Second Hand Store, Valley Furniture and Mobile Home Sales, and the car wash on Valley Drive in Miles City. Patti enjoyed managing the businesses and working with the public and spoke often of her business experiences. Patti married Gerald Childers in December of 1965, and to this union a daughter, Michelle G., was born. After her divorce, Patti worked various jobs and moved to Rapid City, SD in 1993. In 1997, she moved to Pierre where she resided with her two cats, Spirit and Spike. Patti enjoyed collecting wind chimes, rocks and crystals (which she believed held power) and anything that she found to be special. Patti lived her motto of “Ever forward!” to her utmost as long as she was able; she was a special lady who touched many lives and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Survivors grateful for having shared in Patti’s life are her mother, Rita Root of Miles City, MT; sister, Marie Root of Missoula, MT; daughter, Michelle Childers of Butte, MT; grandchildren Ashley, Colleen, and Jacob Bahner; close friend, Carol Schmautz of Pierre; many cousins; and all the friends and neighbors who came to know and help her. She was preceded in death by her father, Dan Root, grandparents, and recently her Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Roy.
