Pat was born in Miles City, Montana on December 11, 1948, the son of Thomas Royal and Bernice Rose (Murdy) Mackenzie. He attended Trail Creek Country School and, contrary to popular belief, with no absences in grades 1-8. He then attended Custer County High School, graduating in 1966. Pat enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years before returning to Miles City. He married his first wife, Eva Welch in 1973, she was killed in 1974 in a tragic car accident. Following this, Pat worked on area ranches, sharing his knowledge of horses with others. During this time, Pat married Doraleen Basaraba, through this union, Pats first daughter, Lacy Rae was born. The two were later divorced and Pat began work for Burlington Northern Railroad, which he was employed by for 16 years. It was then that Pat met the love of his life, Stacy Finlayson, and they were married August 18, 1990. Pat and Stacy had two children, Mandy Arlene and Sage Caitlyn. Following the railroad, Pat owned P&R Tree Service for many years with his good friend, Bob Pauley. Lastly, Pat owned and operated the contractor freight service, hauling mail from Miles City to Broadus until the time of his death.
During his life, Pat was the face of Coors and Marlboro on billboards throughout the state. Pat had great love for team roping, rodeos, breaking, buying and selling horses, hunting, and above all, spending time with family and friends. Nothing made Pat happier than watching his girls participate in rodeo. Pat was an avid poker player who never played a bad hand. There was never a dull moment in Pats life, he was always there to brighten the lives of others, and lend a hand however he could.

I was a dear friend and fellow Army veteran with Mack. He and I were stationed in Fulda Germany together. He was a truck driver and I was his section chief and platoon Sgt. We spent a great deal of time together and raised a lot of hell. He was always in my heart and I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I loved him and respected him so very much. God Blessed my life when He put Pat and me together for the few years we served together. I will miss him dearly. If anyone would like to contact me about this wonderful man. I would be honored. My heartfelt love for this man..
