My most vivid memories of Sam are of him singing with his band at the dances at the “Harmony Hangout” in Miles City in the 70’s. I can hear him singing “The Sounds of Silence” like it was yesterday. It’s a very sad day. My thoughts and prayers go to Parker and the Pettigrew family during this painful time.

  23. Truman & Judy Bovee says

    January 30, 2013 at 5:26 pm

I have been a dear friend of Sam’s sister, Peggy, since we were in third grade. I spent many many hours in the Petigrew house and I consider them a part of my family. Sam was an intelligent, hard working and kind person. Whenever he visited Miles City, he pitched right in at the Airport Inn doing anything that needed to be done, from cutting meat to changing a light bulb. He was a kind and gentle Papa to his grandkids and I believe that says a lot about the kind of man that Sam was. Earlene, Peggy, Pete, Parker, Pam and Mari, you can all be assured that Sam is in a truly blessed place, free from pain and competing for head angel. I will miss you my brother, Sam. God Speed. Love, Judy

Dearest Pettigrews: It’s hard to hold back the tears as I read about Sam, his loving family, and all the thoughts of so many former classmates and friends. That list, by the way, reads like a “Who’s Who” of CCHS–with Sam at the top of the list. Though it’s been a long time since the summer of 1974 when Dad moved our family to Texas and I left Sam, Parker, Rick Jones, and the rest of the Band, it really seems like yesterday that we were all downstairs in the Pettigrew home, firing up the old tube amplifiers and the Fender Rhodes piano, eating great snacks prepared by Mrs. Pettigrew, and having another jam session. Though I came from the “other” side of town, Sam and Parker took me in and made me feel like family. The love for music I developed in the Band helped me find my precious wife, has blossomed in the lives of six beautiful children, ten wonderful grandchildren, and countless students I’ve had the privilege to serve in 29 years of band directing. In a very real way, I owe a great musical debt to Sam. He was the leader of the Band. His courage, strength, vision, and friendship impacted my character and help me become the man I am today. God be thanked for Sam Pettigrew and his influence on so many lives. May the Prince of Peace bring comfort to all who morn Sam. I know that we will yet hear him play and sing!

May God wrap you all in his loving arms as you struggle with your loss. Sam was a very bright light to so many people, for so many years. I will forever cherish our friendship. His smile lit up every room he ever entered, and I will be forever grateful that Sam thought of me as a friend, and I know I am a better man for having known Sam. Please know that your sorrow and grief is shared by everybody that knew Sam. His mischevious smile will be greatly missed. God Bless you all.

Peggy, how full of grief I am for you and your brothers and sister! I know how difficult this time is for you, having lost my little sister, Michele, when she was just in her 30’s. It is earth-shaking to lose a sibling, especially when they are so young. I miss Michele still. I know that there will always be an empty spot in your family. I’m praying for you, that God will wrap you in His arms and give you comfort and peace.

    January 31, 2013 at 9:30 am

I knew Sam only through our shared love of aviation. In some ways I believe this to be the purest of friendships. It has no alternate history, no immediate issues, just a heartfelt shared appreciation of what is true and now, trying to fly a model airplane. I remember commenting to others at WIA flying field how Sam’s flying had improved so dramatically in recent flights. Inverted fly-byes, stall turns and more, he just seemed to have a confidence and grace that frankly I have never experienced in all my modeling. When he attended Wings and Wheels, he drew young and old alike to his enthusiasm for flight. He shared and gave of himself tirelessly and continuously throughout the day. Needless to say by three PM, the rest of us had slowed down a bit, but not Sam.
His dry humor revealed a great deal and in my laughter there was always a kernel of personal truth that needed visiting, however reluctant I was to do so. His quiet, gentle manner, concealed a great strength borne of experience and wisdom. From his smile I realized that while he liked pretty much everybody, he liked me too. And that became more and more important as we became real friends. I will miss Sam more than I know right now.
… To family and friends, I share your sadness in the news of Sam’s passing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers, but especially Sam. Because he was a friend.

My memories of Sam go back to Junior High and Mr. Hale Swanson’s band…as well as the Band that played for all of us at our dances at the Harmony Hangout!! And loving to hear those guys play “American Pie”……Sam held a bright spot in many of our hearts, as I can tell from reading all of these missives. He had the greatest smile…although I hadn’t seen him in years, the picture I see of him shows that his smile remained as beautiful as ever.
God Bless you all…I pray for healing for your hearts.

Sam took me skiing the first time I ever got the opportunity to go in the Rocky Mountains. He helped me replace a spare part on my car probably within a month of meeting him. I knew him as a co-worker, boss and more importantly a friend. We lost a good one way too soon. He was very kind and would go out of his way to help with almost anything. Sam was a hero to my two boys when they were small and they had not even met him yet. They were awe struck just from the stories I would tell them about him. In my memories of my best times of my younger days Sam is in there in most of them leading the charge with that “we’re getting away with something” grin of his. Backpacking, skiing, flying, “socializing”, road trips, concerts and goofing there was Sam. Our love and prayers go out to you and your family, bud. I love you man!

We, too, extend our sympathy to Sam’s entire family. Although he has been taken at such a young age he truly had a full life encompassing so much accomplishment in many areas, not the least of which is a wonderful family. May God’s peace be with you all.

Our deepest sympathy to all of the families involved. I remember all of the Pettigrews and always looked forward to talking with old friends when they came home to visit. Our whole family grew up with the Airport Inn and Sam will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all

Reading all these wonderful memories and special moments from everyone has made me so glad to know many of you, and I am especially glad to have known Sam. His rendition of “Stairway to Heaven” in Choraleers, singing with him at music festivals, band playing at The Hangout, the Airport Inn, we went to his Senior prom together. I had not seen him in many years and wish I could attend his service. To the Pettigrew and Rogers families-I send my deepest sympathy. May your memories of the wonderful times you shared with Sam comfort you always.

We didn’t know Sam personally but we’ve been associated with the Pettigrew family for many years due to their playing in my father’s high school band and also from all the years we’ve gone to Airport Inn. Everyone in the family has always been very kind to those in mine and we’ve always enjoyed any interaction we’ve had with them. Denise and I are very sorry for their loss, especially in the case of Earlene. We wish all the family the very best in the future and are saddened by any event that harms those we care about. Our deepest condolences.

To say Sam was a great guy would be an understatement. When I first moved to Colorado Sam invited me to his home for Thanksgiving because I had no family in the state. This allowed me to see Sam in his personal element; father, friend, husband. All of which he was stellar at. I can only hope that I can emulate some of the character that this man had. He was my boss and my friend, and embodied everything I was looking for when I moved to mountains. Thanks for the laughs Sam. I’ll never forget you.

Mari and kids, and all the Pettigrew and Rogers family:

I was so sorry to hear about Sam. My Dad and I had just talked to him at Airport Inn a short time ago and I’m so glad he came over to our table to chat. He will definitely be missed by everyone who knew him. My deepest sympathies-

    Dear Pettigrew.Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sam. Earline. This is not the natural progression no mother should have to bury a son. I hope that. Happy memories are yours and the warmth of friends and family. Peggy. I wish I would have been able to be there for you. You were all in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely. Jude Hardesty
