Some of my earliest memories were of Paul and George, who I always considered to be family. When I was a very little girl, I loved Paul and used to sit on is lap and tell him that if he wasn’t married when I grew up that I would marry him. He always knew when I needed support from someone outside of my family and he always seemed to know what to say especially when it came time to safety issues regarding my grandfather, father and uncles working in the mine. I will always remember the night when Paul and George’s father died in the mine. I sat by the window waiting for my father to return knowing how dangerous it was for all of them in their attempts to remove his body. A few days later, both Paul and George came to tell me that nothing was going to happen to them or my family. I will always love them for considering me at such a difficult time for them. After my father’s service, when he passed away, we all met at a bar in Roundup. I went over to Paul who was sitting with his girlfriend and others, got down on one knee, pulled out a plastic ring I had gotten from a gum ball machine, and proposed marriage to him. I needed to lighten up the mood. I wish you could have seem the look on his face, as he said “Hell NO! Your father would come down from heaven and kill me.” Everyone laughed and I so appreciated his knowing that my love for him was always going to be there no matter what. Family is often who we choose to be labeled that not necessarily who is a blood relative. Paul and George were family and I think of them often and miss them terribly.
