Pauline Louise Dyba Flotkoetter was born Aug 4, 1937 in Jordan, Montana to parents Anton and Polly Dyba. She was one of four siblings with her brother Charlie and sisters Caroline and Norma. They made their home in Cohagen until 1949 when they moved to Miles City. Pauline attended Sacred Heart High School graduating in 1955. She began her lifelong journey in nursing upon graduating from the Presentation School of Nursing in 1959. Pauline started her nursing career in Miles City mainly working in Obstetrics at Holy Rosary and at Garberson Clinic for Dr. Stickney.
While working as a full-time nurse, Pauline proudly raised her four sons: Bob, Jim, Rick, and Mike in Miles City. She was the matriarch of her family, ruling her boys with an iron fist and peacock bath brush! There was nothing Pauline would not do for her boys from hunting, fishing, den mothering cub scout troops, to agate hunting. You name it-she did it!
Later Pauline moved to Glendive and joined their hospital, eventually becoming the Director of Nursing. She started travel nursing, serving the south eastern corner of Montana, mainly at the Sidney Hospital. In 2004, Pauline found her way back home to Miles City and rejoined the Holy Rosary team in Urgent Care and ER inevitably becoming Acute Care Manager.
Her thirst for knowledge in the medical field never stopped! Not only did she pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the University of Phoenix at age 72; she immediately went on to complete her Master of Science in Nursing Education. Her graduation was such a proud moment, and she was thrilled to share it with her sons and their wives in Arizona.
Pauline was known for openly sharing her nursing knowledge with fellow colleagues throughout her career. She even tried to retire, but her love of nursing drove her to take a position as Director of Nursing Program at Miles Community College at age 80. She extended her passion by working with nursing students and was not only a well-respected instructor but gladly acted as a mentor to many students.
Outside of nursing, Pauline had many interests. She was an avid gardener, often winning Yard of the Week, and always striving for the grand champion fair ribbon for her dahlias. Her green thumb grew great vegetables at both her home and multiple plots at the Holy Rosary Community Garden. She loved traveling anywhere with her family, making every effort to watch her grandson Brian play for the Bobcats. She was a devoted grandmother, making sure she had a special bond with each grandchild. She was a fun-loving, Bunco-playing, bingo-winning machine of a woman. Wow, is there anything else she could have packed into those 83 years! We love you Grandma P.
Pauline passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her beloved dogs, Belle and Moxie. She was proceeded in death by her parents, infant sister, brother, and her son, Mike. Pauline is survived by her sons Bob (Cindy) of Texarkana, Jim (Vicki) of Laurel, Rick (Kim) of Miles City, Tracie of Billings, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, her sister Norma, brother-in-law Robert, niece and nephew Laurie and Steven Tom.

Pauline was a true inspiration. I have never worked with anyone so small in physical stature but so large in her life. Her positive attitude and tenacity was contagious. She has forever left a legacy on the success of our Nursing Program. Miles Community College is a far better place because of what Pauline accomplished. Our Faculty and Staff are far better educators for working with her. Most importantly, our Students are far better people, caregivers, and professionals because of Pauline. I feel so blessed to have met and worked with her.
To the Flotkoetter Family, please accept our deepest condolences from our MCC Family!

My deepest condolences go out to Pauline’s family.

Aunt Pauline, you will be greatly missed. Our family still talks about our visit in July and the wondetful desserts you made. We also enjoyed the flowers you grew. I know the boys are mourning a huge loss. Our hearts go out to each and every one of them and their families. We will all cherish the memories of you.
Gwen Strub says
It was my absolute privilege to work as Pauline’s assistant in the nursing program at MCC. I loved hearing her stories and always told her “you’re either related to, worked with, nursed or delivered everyone in eastern Montana!” She was a wonderful boss, but she was a true blessing as a friend. If you had Pauline in your corner, you had everything. My favorite moments during some long days in our office were when she’d tell stories on her kids. My favorite, which I had her tell several times was the one where she accidentally whooped the neighbor boy with her Avon peacock shower brush. All she saw flash by were the swimming trunks which had been borrowed from one of her own boys (the one she was really wanting to whoop!) She’d get to laughing so hard telling that story she could hardly get out the ending. I loved that little spitfire like she was my own grandma, so I can’t fathom the loss her family feels. I’m so very sorry for your loss.
MARTHA CRANDALL says
I am so sorry. We just never know.

Marlys Eggum says
Oh Pauline! Life will not be the same without you. You were my mentor, my supervisor, my peer, but most of all my friend. My deepest sympathy to your sons and their families. You were their cornerstone and left a lifelong legacy. Until we meet again, rest in Heaven’s Peace my friend.

Rick and family so sorry for your loss
Cathy Willson Gamrath says
I knew Pauline back in the day as Dr. Stickney’s extra efficient nurse. I don’t think she ever forgot a name or face or a medical problem. I was amazed to find her involved in the nursing program at MCC when my daughter started work there as assistant to the director. I had this silly idea that she would have retired long since. When she took over as director at the tender age of 80, I realized the Energizer Bunny had nothing on her! Whenever I’d find myself flagging when doing yard work or shoveling snow, I’d tell myself that if Pauline could do it, surely I could! We often reminisced about ranch life and I discovered she also craved goodies from the past. I was already buying supplies to make her homemade fruitcake for Christmas! I hope heaven has lots of fruitcake and all the other goodies of your childhood, Pauline!
Doug & Kim Blunt says
Miles City has experienced a great loss with the passing of Pauline. She was loved and respected by many people over the years. It’s hard to imagine how many lives she touched as a nurse and an educator. What a blessing her life was. Our condolences to the many family members and friends who loved her.
Vicki Strohmayer Mason says
What a tremendous loss for her family, community and nursing profession. Pauline was an icon for all of us in nursing and will be forever respected. God-speed Pauline.
Arlene Gieser says
Oh Pauline I will miss you lots. Thank you for all of the help you gave me and mom when you were a nurse at GMC and at SHC. I will never ever forget the help when mom had to be ambulanced to Sidney. You were waiting for APS to show up, to charge me with abuse. The look you gave me was “I have your back.” I will never ever forget that dear lady. This world lost a daughter, sister, wife, grand mother, friend, nurse and confidante. Your family has my deepest sympathy as well as a lot of prayers. You have earned those wings Pauline so soar an soar high. Rest In Peace.
Nellie Travis Williams says
The community of Miles City won the lottery – by having Pauline as their ambassador.
Her life of commitment to her family and friends and her illustrious nursing career is an example to all. She walked her talk. I am humbled to have known her. We were classmates from 5th grade through three years of Presentation Nursing School.
Recently, September 26-27, I was back in the old hometown and brought the cremated remains of my 101-year old mother to be gently placed in the Yellowstone River. I called my friend Pauline prior to leaving my home in San Antonio. I needed to know how and where to access the river. Of course, Pauline knew exactly where and said, “I will take you there.” So Pauline and I, under the light of a big harvest moon, released my mother’s ashes. It was all orchestrated by God.
And now suddenly I have no Pauline in my hometown. Memories of Pauline will live with me eternally.
Dear family of Pauline, please know you are blessed for having had her in your lives.
Randi Arave says
Thank you for sharing Pauline with so many of us. We felt like family by her side in nursing and the community. There is nothing she wouldn’t do to teach and make life more understandable. Working by her side as a student and as a fellow nurse she never made you feel like you didn’t know what you were doing, but rather it was as if you were one of her lifelong colleagues and friends, no matter your level of experience. I know Pauline is doing a jig in Heaven with Jesus as she is happy she is finally home. She will continue to do so many good things. She never could sit still so I am sure God had a job for her as soon as she arrived to be with Him. Love, giant hugs, and God’s blessings to you all. We’ll miss you Pauline.
Rob and Shannon Dinardi says
Our condolences on the loss of your Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma. The fond memories will make you smile and give you comfort in this time of pain.
Mary Kasten says
Vicki and Jim and all . . . so sorry for your loss. She was quite the mama. You were so blessed to have her! Love and prayers.
Lisa Kincannon-Ziegler says
Dear Pauline-
I can’t stop shedding selfish tears–I just can’t believe you are gone. You were so strong, so vibrant, and so full of life–I guess I always just expected you to live for ever. So with that being said, I deeply regret all the times I said to myself, I’m going to stop by to chat, but instead allowed the other voice of procrastination take over: “Oh I’ll catch up with her another day. She’s usually fairly easy to catch at home anyway, working in her garden or with her flowers.”
That never happened near as many times as I said that to myself, and I can’t tell you how sorry I am Pauline. I’d always wanted to have a heart to heart with you especially, to let you know how bad I felt for how Holy Rosary treated you at the end of your career–essentially a forced retirement. Yep….I just said that. However, that’s the kind of person and nurse you were—despite the lack of show of respect and well-deserved appreciation for your years and years and years of absolute dedication to the patients, your staff and co-workers, as well as the hospital as an entity….you took a hard swallow and just went on.
It did not stop you from going on to share your talents, skills, abilities, experience and wisdom of nursing though, through other means and MCC. It did not stop you because you’ve always done what you did, not for money, glory or status….you did it because you epitomize what it means to be a nurse at the role’s very core–a dedicated, competent and wise, caring advocate for the patient, above all–even swearing physicians and providers, chaotic scenarios, and arguing team members, as well as the almighty bureaucratic regulations; patient first….always.
It was an absolute honor to work with you Pauline. You cracked me up so many times because you never engaged in arguing with anyone–you simply said what needed to be said, and did what needed to be done, and went on; the dumbfounded look on peoples’ faces after you had dealt with them….was absolutely priceless!:) I still chuckle as I think of those times.
You certainly were more than a nurse though–you were a Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Aunt; I thank you for sharing your stories, journeys, heartbreaks, and pure joys with me of raising your family. Oh how absolutely proud you were of them….I have not met them all in person, but I bet I could at least tell you a little about every single one of them:) You were such a great role model of tough love, yet unconditional love though as well. Please give Mike a big hug for me. I know your family is going to miss you dearly no doubt; but I also know you will certainly be with each and every one of them in spirit.
Thank you for taking Moxy in as your own, with Belle. I know your intentions were for Moxy to settle Belle down; however, it sounds like the opposite occurred and Belle simply taught Moxy all she knew–LOL! I am tickled pink to know Moxy brought you such joy, and to hear Moxy and Belle were with you as you transitioned to the other side, absolutely melts my heart, and gets the tears flowing again. However, one simply cannot ask for a better place for you to be in such loving grace and peace of God. Thank you for the footprint you’ve placed on my heart, Pauline. Peace be with you for always.
Dear Family of Pauline-
Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am for your loss; I only hope you can at least find some comfort in knowing how much Pauline meant to so many people. I know in the heart of my hearts, you all are the absolute love and pure joy of her being. So as you know her better than I, than I’m sure you know that she ain’t leavin’ your side for nothing…she’s just got a much better view from where she’s at now:), so…..if I were you, I’d still watch my p’s and q’s! 🙂 Just sayin’:) LOL
Peace be with you all.
Lisa Kincannon-Ziegler

I am so sorry to hear about Pauline. She lived a very full life and touched many hearts. She was my favorite nurse for all the years she worked with Dr Stickney and my go to after Doc quite general practice and went to psychology. I would call her when I had a doctor that thought I didn’t know what needed to be done with my ear infections and she would just call the pharmacy and order what I really needed to be taking! Bless her heart. She certainly saved me a lot of grief with that. She was also a great friend and even the last time I ran into her in Miles City a couple of years back she still knew who I was, asked about the family still living and knew who had already passed. A remarkable woman. I know she will be greatly missed. My condolences to all of you.
