On the morning of February 1, 2007, Jake took his last horse ride, sheared his last sheep, branded his last calf, flew his last airplane, drove his bus and talked about his dogs for the last time.
His memories will now be remembered by his loved one's and his many friends. Jake was born on November 7, 1914, at the ranch on Ash Creek, near Ismay, the youngest son of Payton Jacob and Essie Hale Shumaker. He grew up in the Ash Creek and Whitney Creek area. Jake graduated from Ismay High School in 1932 and had started his life with sheep in 1929, tromping wool and tagging sheep. He began shearing at ten cents a head and his goal was to shear 100 a day.Jake and Lorraine Rosmussen were married on June 10, 1938 in Baker, MT. They lived on the Older place until 1942 when the house was moved one mile to be on the MDU pipeline. This continued to be the home ranch until Jake retired.
After the death of his two sons, Joey and Shawn, Jake became involved with the Yellowstone Boys Ranch. At his retirement his ranch was placed in trust at the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch and because of this generous gift Shumaker Lodge was built there in his honor. In 1985, he bought a converted greyhound bus and became a snowbird in Quartzsite, AZ. He made the trip back and forth for 21 years, the spring of 2006 being his last trip home.
Jake is preceded in death by his brothers Sam and Charlie, wife Lorraine, Sons Joseph Raymond and Shawn Kyle, granddaughter Tiffany Brooke and daughter-in-law Theresa Marie. He is survived by daughters Sandra (Jim) Ross of Terry, MT, DeAn Small of Seattle, WA, sons Payton Jacob Shumaker, III and Mark (Christine) Whitney of Billings, MT.
