PFC Owen D. Witt, age 20, of Sand Springs, MT, died in Iraq on May 24, 2004. His mission was to serve his Country, which he chose by enlisting in the United States Army. Owen was extremely affected by the events of September 11, 2001 and was determined to defend the United States.

He was involved in the 4-H, basketball team, and loved to be at the ranch and spend time with his family. Owen was a terrific person. He was kind, loving and caring with a great sense of humor and wonderful smile. He lived with his family on a working ranch in Montana. He was an artist, working at painting in oils. Owen wanted to ranch, raise a family and paint. He liked country and western music and was a very gregarious fella.

The love and prayers of family and friends help to fill the emptiness. The void that we experience is made less lonely by the good, happy and bright thoughts we share of Owen. We are the better for having known him! His mom, Karen, feels that this was Owens destiny. She is glad in the thought that Owen is safely home. We believe that God is lucky to have him. We are grateful that we knew him for his 20 years on the earth. We miss him always. Our Faith will sustain us! God Bless you Owen! We love you! The Witt Family.

Look into those confident eyes, and that cocky smile. Imagine him in a high school football uniform, his shoulders back, for once not slouching, his white legs sticking out the bottom and not looking strong enough to hold him up. Imagine him in a rented tux for prom (complete with his own cowboy hat and boots), standing next to my sister and his best friend an intimidating trio. His grades werent good enough for scholarships andhe wasn't really cut out for academiaso he took the only other option he could find to get out of this one-horse town. He traded in his school colors for a different kind of uniform, and went to be all that he could be. Now those colors will again be traded in for something new, his own flag draped coffin coming home from Iraq. It will take at least two weeks for them to get him home, two weeks for his friends and family to mourn before they even get to say good-bye. There isnt a building big enough in that town for all the people who will come for this hero's welcome.
