Inurnment with Military Honors: Brockway Cemetery
Phillip Gustavus Haglund, Sr., age 88, a farmer and rancher of McCone County passed away Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive, Montana.
Phillip was born April 3, 1919 on a family farm in Bowman County, North Dakota to L.J. and Louise (Hoffman) Haglund. He attended grade school at various country schools and according to his stories, had to walk up hill bucking a wind both directions. He then attended high school at Brockway and stayed in the dorm since it was too far to walk. He attended college for two years at Montana State College in Bozeman and then joined the military. He served as a Bombardier for 86 combat missions, finishing as squadron leader. Phillip met Beatrice Grace Meleton while training at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. On February 26, 1945 Phillip and Beatrice were married in Shreveport, LA.Following the war, they moved back to Bozeman, MT so he could finish college.
Phillip operated a ranch in Eastern Montana until his retirement in his sixtie. He was very talented and served on various boards throughout his life including: an instructor for the Veterans Administration in which he taught on-farm training classes 1947-1950, Montana State University Advisory Board 1964-1984 (chairman of the board from 1974-1978), Montana Agricultural Experiment Station board 1965-1970 (chairman from 1968-1970), director of the Endowment and Research Foundation at M.S.U. 1970-1974,Montana Committee for Humanities board member1975-1978,McCone County High School District #1 board member 1974-1979, Montana Bank of Circle director1979-1984, McCone County Museum director in which he organized and setup the county museum 1980-1984. Phillip enjoyed his children and grandchildren. One of the things he liked best was when the grandkids would lie in bed with him and he would tell them scary stories about bears and wolves. Even in their later years when some of the grandkids were in their 30s he liked tolie in bed with them and tell them a scary story. He also enjoyed taking his grandkids hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with everyone at the cabin on Buck Creek and sharingwar stories with his grandsons. Phillip loved to travel and have the opportunity to see the world, entertaining his friends and visiting with people.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Beatrice of 62 years; his children, Phil (Dolores) Haglund of Brockway, MT, PamHaglundof Kalispell, MT and Frank (Pat) Haglund of Hawaii; seven grandchildren, Tami (Kyle) Haynie of Great Falls, MT, Kristi (Daimon) Parrotte of Havre, MT, Mariah (Mark) Rodeghiero of Boise, ID, Michael Eliason of Portland, OR, David Eliason of Kalispell, MT, Lauren Haglund of Salt Lake City, UT and Susan Haglund of Portland, OR; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Orton of Ogden, UT and Elizabeth King of Seattle, Washington; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, L.J. and Louise Haglund, brothers, Erling and John, and sister, Luella Brekke.

Cremation has taken place as requested by Phillip.
A memorial service honoring Phillips life will be held Tuesday evening September 25, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive to accommodate Phillips wife, Beatrice. All are invited to attend. A second memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Circle with a lunch immediately following at Schmidts Banquet Hall. Inurnment with military honors will follow the lunch at Brockway Cemetery. Father Wayne Pittard will be officiating services.
