Prentice Negaard Phipps, age 79 of Brusett, MT passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at the Garfield County Health Center, in Jordan, MT, following a long illness.
Prentice was born on February 2, 1943, in Graceville MN. She was the fourth child of Olaf and Phyllis Reed Negaard. Her childhood was spent in Minnesota and North Dakota where her dad was a commercial fisherman. Prentice graduated high school in Mohall N.D., in 1962. Following graduation she moved to MT with her family, who settled in the Brusett area and continued to commercial fish on the Fort Peck Reservoir.
Prentice met Clinton Phipps at Brusett and they were married on October 11, 1963, in Courd’alene I.D. Following their marriage, they resided on the Phipps family ranch at Brusett. They were joined in 1966 by their first daughter, Jodi, Beth in 1968, and Nicole in 1979. Prentice loved kids and was a fill in mother to many. She loved and cared for them as if they were her own. This included Tammy Phipps Shawver, Brenda Phipps, Ted Phipps, Alaina Loomis Browning, and some of her own siblings. She was a hard worker, an avid quilter, a tremendous gardener, and she loved camping and fishing.
Prentice is survived by daughters Jodi (Kelly) Pierson, Beth (Christo) Pierce, Nicole (Steve) Downs, her grandchildren Dixie (Jess) Pierson, Isaac (Katy) Pierson, Nathan Downs, Melissa Downs, and Isabella Pierce, great grandchildren Clinton Pierson, Wyatt Pierson, Amy Pierson, and Jasmine Moyer-Young, brothers Duane (Rena) Negaard, Jerry (Viola) Negaard, Stephen Negaard, Daniel (Rachel) Negaard, Mickel (Esther) Negaard, sisters Bonnie Loomis and Rebecca Watkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clinton Phipps, parents Olaf and Phyllis Neggard, brothers Jack and Ole Negaard, brothers-in-law Garry Loomis and Bill Watkins, and a niece Cheryl Negaard.
Graveside services for Prentice will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at the Hearts At Peace Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. The graveside service will be followed by a potluck lunch at the Fairview Hall.

I have enjoyed the singular pleasure of being a college instructor to Melissa Downs, one of Prentice’s cherished grandchildren. Given the adage “the apple does not fall far from the tree,” I can only imagine what an amazing grandmother Prentice was. Plus, she was married into the Phipps clan, many (well, some) of whom I know and love. My heart breaks for the sorrow you are experiencing at this time. My sincerest condolences to all of you. Garfield County has lost one of its stalwart citizens. May her memory and your faith sustain you all through this difficult time.
