Ruth Christine Preston, age 90, of Miles City passed away on June 4, 2010 at the Holy Rosary Hospital Extended Care in Miles City after a long illness.
Mrs. Preston was born on May 19, 1920 in Prowers County, Southeastern Colorado. She was the fourth of five daughters born to James G. Simpson and Mabel (Stanley) Simpson, who were the children of Scottish immigrants.
Mrs. Preston grew up in the small rural towns of Holly and Granada where her father was telephone linesman and road maintenance worker. After graduating from Granada High school in 1939, Mrs. Preston worked for the Holly Chieftan Newspaper as a copier and office assistant.
On January 10, 1942, she married James L. Preston of Lamar, Colorado where they resided until Mr. Preston enlisted in the Army/Air force and was sent to Aircraft construction school. Mrs. Preston served as a seamstress making Armed Service uniforms in Oklahoma City during this time.
After being Honorably Discharged from the service, the Prestons moved back to Lamar, Colorado where James became the office manager of the Lamar Dailey Newspaper and Mrs. Preston was employed by the Prowers County Welfare Office.
In August of 1955, the family moved to Miles City, where Mrs. Preston and her sister Merle Flint opened a childrens clothing store called Guys & Dolls.
In 1960, Christine was elected president of the Xi Gamma Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was active in the Presbyterian Womens group where she met many of her dear friends and loved playing weekly Bridge with her club. Mrs. Preston was a proud of her Scottish heritage and was always pleased to attend the Bobby Burns Festival for the dancing and listening to the bagpipes.
After retiring, Christine and her husband Jim took a cruise ship tour and later visited Branson, Missouri to hear the Lawrence Welk Band. Mrs. Preston thoroughly enjoyed the trips. After her husband death in 2005, Mrs. Preston later moved to Assisted Living.
Christine is survived by her sons, J. Steven Preston and Scott S. Preston, Sister Carol McGee of Lamar, Colorado. In addition, surviving family members include Kari (Mark) Chapman and Kayla Preston of Spokane, Jeremy Preston Danielle (Andrew) McKay of Minneapolis, MN, Jacob Preston of Colorado Springs, CO and great-grandchildren Tristan Quintus and Ava Preston.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.
