In Memory Of

Randy Schwartz

August 16, 1968 – August 18, 2011

Randy C. Schwartz, a decorated war veteran, of Miles City passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the age of 43 as a result of injuries from a plane crash near Forsyth, MT.

Randy was born on August 16, 1968 in Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada to Bruce and Sylvia (Morey) Schwartz. While growing up on his family farm north of Terry, MT, Randy always had an interest in technology and flight.

After graduating high school in Terry in 1986, he entered a 22 year long adventure with the U.S. Navy where he was a helicopter tactical sensor operator and rescue swimmer. He received a master training specialist certificate and graduated from the Top Gun Seahawk Weapons and Tactics School. During this time, he was reacquainted with an old classmate, Roxie. They fell in love and completed their family by marrying on April 26, 2002.
Randy finished his career with the Navy as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader at the Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School Pacific in San Diego, California. He then took a position with General Atomics of San Diego where he conducted quality assurance test flights and evaluations prior to delivery of these systems to the Department of Defense. He was loaned out as a civilian contractor to the U.S. Air Force where he instructed pilots and aircrews how to use 3 dimensional radar, data-link, GPS, and high definition optical camera systems.

The family lived in San Diego until July 2008 when they moved back to Miles City. With all the years of school, training, and instructing technology, Randy looked forward to providing a wide array of services to Eastern Montana businesses and individuals. Randy was able to put his skills to work by starting Eye In The Sky Photography and Computer Services along with surfmilescity.com.

Randy was a man of hone’sty and integrity who prided himself on being the best man that he could be. He was the kind of person who always did the right thing 100% of the time. He always ensured everyone around him was fully taken care of no matter the sacrifice he had to make.

Randy is survived by his wife Roxie Schwartz of Miles City; his children: Chelsee Kalfell and her fiance Drew Phalen, Hayden Kalfell (Amanda Askin) all of Miles City, Brent Schwartz of Owatonna, MN, and Morgan Kalfell also of Miles City; his father Bruce and Cleo “Mum” Schwartz of Canada; his sister: Tracy Quast and nieces Sheradyn and Fallon Quast all of Canada; his grandchildren: Brylee and Rylan of Miles City, along with numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Sylvia Morey and grandparents Fred and Barb (Hess) Schwartz.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veteran´s Cemetery with full military honors. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.stevensonandsons.com.

    Dear Roxie and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Randy’s death and want you to know we are praying that you’ll find peace in the arms of Jesus as you walk through this difficult time. I loved seeing his amazing photos on his fb page – esp. the “Fair Sunset”. It reminds me of home so much. I’ll always remember what a great asset he was to our jazz band in high school.

Shock and a hollow feeling is the only way to describe what I feel. This is what I would like to share with you all, it’s a Friday and we are all going home from a long day of doing trainers at HSL-41. A student approaches Randy and say’s can you go over some stuff I’m not sure about. Randy of course say’s yes and spends another hour or two helping out a fellow AW. That is Randy and that is how I’ve always remembered him and always will. Love you brother rest in peace.
My family will be saying prayers for you and your family Roxie.

When someone passes away, people start saying all theses wonderful things about them….but with Randy, people ALWAYS had wonderful things to say about him!! He was “that guy”….that guy that was always there to help, that guy that was always there to make you feel better, that guy that could always make you laugh. He was the kind of friend that most people apsire to be. He was a comapssionate soul who never asked for anything in return. He was a genuinely good person who surrounded himself with good people. I was fortunate enough to be one of those people in his early years in San Diego. I will never forget all the fun times we had…Disneyland with Randy was the best!! The world has lost a true American hero, but we are all lucky and better people for having known him. I will miss you dearly my friend.

    Randy,

I’m sorry that such end came upon you. Life isn’t fair and sometimes it’s just downright cruel. But then again, there are those days that, that are just so beautiful and nothing else matters.

Those days are indeed special and worth the struggle of life and all the putrid hurt that we sometimes endure. We will always have those days, your family especially, to remember, and be, simply happy and to fill us with joy.

They are the days we’ll remember, forever, and the rest, well, they just don’t matter.

Rest in peace and God Bless.

    My condolences to Randy’s family.

I knew Randy in school. Bruce and Cleo were our neighbors and friends. He was a great kid and a FANTASTIC drummer in band. I remember him as a kind, sincere person who was passionate about his interests. When he got excited about something, his eyes danced, and his enthusiasm was infectious.

Heaven is a better place to have Randy there. May God bless and comfort you as we mourn his departure from earth.

    Roxie, Chelsee, Hayden, and Morgan,

Words can not express the sadness we are experiencing with the loss of Randy. We were fortunate to have met Randy and it was very obvious what a remarkable man he was and what an impact he has had in your lives, and the lives of everybody he met. We are all better people because he was in our lives. Here’s a portion of a poem I always find comforting in times like this…..”After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure–that you really are strong. And you really do have worth. And you learn and learn–with every goodbye you learn.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    With love,
    Troy, Dolly, Macey, and Shelby

He made a lasting impression on my life. As a teacher and instructor, we sometimes are told about the impact that we have on our students. I moved to Quesnel in about 1976 or 1977.Started grade 5 in Lakeview Elementary. We lived nearby this school and somehow met a Randy Swartz down the street. We hit it off, as kids we hung out all the time. We saw this movie together called Petes Dragon in the only theatre in Quesnel. Used to go over to his house a lot. His Mom seemed very nice. We used to take out his BB gun and blast a few eggs in the snowbank. Ride our bikes. Then one day he said they were moving to Montana. That was a devastating blow. I was sad for a long time. This could all be a huge coincidence thought i would share anyways. Whatever it is, I am very sorry for your loss and the massive hole it left in his families’ lives.
