Ray E. Miller went home to be with his Lord and Saviour August 28, 2022 at the Wibaux
County Nursing Home where he had resided for the past 6 months.
As his birth announcement in the Miles City Star stated it, a “new hay hand” was born to
Charles Washington “CW” and Gladys Miller December 26, 1934 joining his sister Jean.
He attended schools in Miles City, playing basketball and working at Bud’s Union 76
station while in high school. He graduated high school on a Friday in 1953 and on the
following Monday began his long railroad career with the Milwaulkee / St. Paul Railroad.
Also after graduating high school Dad enjoyed playing baseball for the Pine Hills
baseball team for about 3 years. He and Janice Todd were married on July 19, 1954.
Together they had 4 children: Debie, Lori Lynn, Tod, and Tracy.
Dad was an electrician by trade and eventually became the Roundhouse Foreman
working on diesel locomotives. He was one of the last employees of the Milwaulkee
when they pulled out of Montana. After the Milwaulkee shut down he worked for various
companies in Miles City including Glader Electric, Mac’s Frontier, and John Scanlan
Construction. In 1990 he got a job on the Arizona Eastern Railway in the Locomotive
Maintenance Facility in Globe AZ. to finish off his railroad career, retiring in 1995. He
and Jan returned to MIles City where he continued to work part time for John Scanlan
and full time taking care of the small family farm.
Dad thoroughly enjoyed family get-togethers especially during the holidays and being
with the grandkids and great grandkids. He also enjoyed watching them in their sporting
events as well as helping them on their projects, ever ready to share a few “good
pointers” or his know-how on fixing and repairing just about anything.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean, and infant daughter Lori
Lynn.
He is survived by his wife Jan, daughters Debie (Greg) Moore, Tracy (Pete) Klauka, and
son Tod. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and numerous
nieces and nephews.

It was such sad news to hear of Uncle Ray’s passing and although I know he’s rejoicing in heaven, he will be missed. He had such a great sense of humor and liked to tease, especially when I was a little girl. He used to tell me I was going to choke if I didn’t stop talking while eating! I’d look at him, think about it for a minute and then start talking again. I have so many good memories of Uncle Ray.
Aunt Jan, Debie, Tod and Tracy, you are in my prayers. I love you all.

My first memory of Ray was when he played basketball for good ol’ CCHS. Nobody could hit a deep corner shot like Ray!
It was then my pleasure to work with Ray for several years while working on the Milwaukee RR. What an enjoyable co-worker and none better! Ray was very knowledgeable, competent, and sincere.
LaVerne Jones Hebner says
Janice – It has been a long time since we had classes together at CCHS. Even tho we were not really friends it was my pleasure to know you and Ray. I remember him as a really good basketball player, then at the 76 Station on Main St. and from my dad mentioning him at the Milwaukee. Everyone liked Ray. I’m sorry he has gone on but that is the way our God has intended it and we will all be together again one day. I wish His peace, comfort and wonderful memories to you all.

Tracy, so sad to hear of your dad’s passing. I think we met your parents a couple times in Gillette. Reading his obituary, he was quite a man!! I know he raised a daughter that we have always admired! Losing parents always leaves a hole in your heart that only grandkids can fill. Just be assured that you will all meet again, someday, when God is ready.

To Ray’s family. I am so sorry to hear of Ray’s passing! I didn’t know him well, but we were classmates and I just remember that he always seemed like a kind person. I knew Todd through his marriage to Shelley and he was a good reflection of his parents. It is always hard to lose a loved one.
