Raymond Brady Jr., Vano e vonehe “Vaneke”, as he was affectionately known by family, (Roaming Sage Wolf) age 72 went home to the loving embrace of Ma’heo on October 8, 2019 at his apartment in Seattle, Washington. An enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and raised on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. He was born in Lame Deer, Montana on September 4, 1947 the eldest son of Raymond Brady Sr. and Fern Shoulderblade. He was raised by his grandparents George and Flossie Bearchum Brady. Raymond was raised into the traditional ways of his grandparent’s upbringing. He was fluent in the Northern Cheyenne language and lived by the teachings of the elders.
He touched many lives in the Seattle area where he resided at Plymouth Apartments where he will be missed by staff and residents. Raymond helped many Cheyenne people who he made contact within the area with his kindness and generosity. He always acknowledged and was happy to see Cheyenne relatives and friends during his travels. We were told he was the Cheyenne language and cultural teacher to many that wanted to learn in the Seattle area.
Raymond attended all his years of schooling at St. Labre Indian School where he played basketball and participated in track. He was a member of the local boxing team that was coached by Lee Lonebear. He was an avid boxer which led him to a step away from being a professional boxer. His choices in life prevented him from pursuing this career. He loved to walk the land and was an avid hunter. He always brought back wild game to feed his family.
He came home intermittently to Lame Deer to visit his parents and family but always returned to Seattle to the place he called home. He always kept in touch with family to update his whereabouts.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents Raymond Brady Sr. and Fern Shoulderblade, paternal grandparents George and Flossie (Bearchum) Brady and maternal grandparents Pius and Ethel Shoulderblade.

Herb at Plymouth Housing. says
There were three memorials for Ray Brady in Seattle, one with his Native recovery group, the second with his Plymouth Housing tenants and staff, and the third will be with the Chief Seattle Club, where Ray was an active member in the past, and he still has a number of relatives and extended family and friends within Chief Seattle Club.
Our memorial for Ray at Plymouth Housing went well, we each went around and told our stories of Ray, with most of them about Ray keeping us on our toes, and how he served as an uncle to most of us, guiding us with his words of wisdom, still earning his name of Roaming Sage Wolf very well. At the end of the memorial, we burnt the white sage to let Ray’s spirit go, everyone smudging for him, he will be remembered. ~Herb at Plymouth Housing of Seattle.
