Richard M. Burgess, age 86, of Jordan passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at home in Jordan.

Richard was born in Miles City, Montana on November 13, 1920, the son of Ray Oliver and Flossie Clothiel (Collins) Burgess. In 1921, his family moved to California for eight years before moving back to Jordan. He attended school at Phon and graduated from high school in Jordan in 1939. Following his schooling he worked around Garfield County until 1942, when he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Richard married Marie Andre Battu on October 1st, 1945 in Charmes, France. They moved to Jordan where they lived on the Burgess Ranch. They bought a home in Jordan when the children entered high school and Richard then commuted to the ranch. Richard also helped raise his sisters three children, Donny Bill (Lou) Haney, Patty (Carl) Wallace and Lena (Bill) Anderson.

Richard served as a County Commissioner, served on the the Selective Service Board, was an active member of the VFW for sixty years and held many offices including Post Commander. He served on the school board at Flat Creek, was a mail carrier for many years, and served on the tax appeal board. Richard loved to spend time with his family and friends playing cards, and help out at the VFW Hall. Richard spent many hours helping build the new community hall. If Richard was not involved with his many activities you could find him on his D6 Cat building damns and moving dirt.

Richard is survived by three sons: Robert (Patty) Burgess of Jordan, MT; Daniel Burgess of Jordan, MT; and Jack (Medora) Burgess of Sidney, MT; two daughters: Cathy (John) McKeever of Jordan, MT; and JoAnn (Bob) Priebe of Helena, MT; sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, an infant son, a daughter-in-law Barb, and two sisters: Lena Haney and Mavis Frady.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Jordan.
