In Memory Of

Richard Eugene Lonebear, age 52, of Lame Deer

October 5, 1970 – November 7, 2022

Richard Eugene Lonebear, Neste Ohvehonevestse-Eagle Chief, was born October 5, 1970 in Crow Agency, MT, to Laura Lonebear and Larry Redwoman. Maheo’ called him home on November 7, 2022.
He attended Lame Deer and Colstrip Schools, receiving his high school diploma in 1989. In his younger years, Richard played all sports but his favorite was boxing. As a member of the CDKC Boxing Team, he won a State Champion Boxing title. His high school athletic career included participation in basketball, football, and cross country. He held various jobs throughout his lifetime but he was fondest of working as a survey assistant, alongside his Uncle Georgie.
Richard was a proud member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, and Crazy Dog Society. He was raised with traditional Cheyenne values, participating in ceremonial and social activities, traveling to pow-wows across Indian Country. He was an outstanding artist, and singer. In the early 90’s he co-founded the Teton Ramblerz Jrz., and designed the first logo that was painted on the drum. “Rabbit” (family nickname) had bright easy going persona to him and an infectious smile with a sense of humor to match.
Survivors include his mother: Laura Lonebear; children: Danny Morales, Tristan (Jacey) Lonebear, Talon (JoRee) Lonebear, Torey (Britney) WolfVoice, and Peter Freeman; grandchildren: Carsyn, Taryn, Trey, Topa, Deshawn, Addison, Dorothea, and Ruby; siblings: Benjamin (RaeDawn) Lonebear, Brian Sanders, and Rich Sanders, Zoey, Lorina, and Cheyenne Redwoman, and Braham Rafino; numerous nephews and nieces; aunts: Leah Lonebear, and Erlyce Littlewhirlwind. In accordance with Cheyenne tradition, Richard was raised by his grandparents, uncles, and aunts. Every day of his childhood consisted of interacting with his Lonebear/Scalpcane siblings.
In 2004, his son Taryn Ryan tragically passed. Richard would never recover from this devastation, of the loss of his first-born son. Although he knew his home was with family, he took a different path, that eventually took his life. He struggled for years with addiction, going into and out of treatment centers. No matter where he ended up, his heart always was at home. We are forever grateful for the help and encouragement that he received from his recovery family. Grateful acknowledgements to those that reached out to help him in his time of need when he was fighting for his sobriety, the Hub, local medical facilities, and Billings community.
Also preceding him in death, his Grandparents: Grover Wolfvoice, Robert & Anna Jean Lonebear, Grace & August Scalpcane; his father; Uncles: LaForce Lonebear, George Scalpcane; Aunts: Lydia & Louise Lonebear, Gertrude Firecrow, and Juanita Lonebear; numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
Extended families include: Hiwalker, Bigman, Robinson, Wolfvoice, Spang, Scalpcane. Please forgive us if we have forgotten to mention names, it is always difficult in time of grief. We love and appreciate our large family.

Condolences and prayers to the family of Richard Eugene..I had a good visit with him before I moved. I Gave him 20 dollars and saw that he actually used the 20 dollars to buy a meal for himself at the mall. When he walked away he said. Me and the security guards are heading to the food court. Lol. He knotted his head towards the security guards and walked off.. He will be missed. 😢

My heart aches for his mom Laura, his kids and all the rest if the family. Last time I saw him he ran up to me and gave me a big hug. He said, “Man, you look just like “Mom”, you even have her gold tooth”. 🤣. It was so good to see him. He was happy and hopeful then. I so wish he could have made it. May he have peace and happiness now..
