In Memory Of

Richard Hess, age 78, of Billings, formerly of Fallon

January 19, 1944 – April 9, 2022

Richard (Dick) Hess was born January 19, 1944, in Glendive, MT to John W. & Aileen (Cooper) Hess.

He passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Riverstone Hospice House in Billings. He spent the prior two weeks in Billings Clinic Hospital due to complications from a leukemia diagnosis in 2016 and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis in 2021.

He was raised in Fallon, MT with four brothers and 1 sister. He attended grade school in Fallon and high school in Terry. Richard attended Dawson Community College after high school and then headed to Wyoming to work in the oil fields for a couple of years. In 1965, he returned to Fallon and purchased the Fred Kaul farm.

On June 12, 1965, he married Lola (Brost) in Terry and to this union were born 3 children. A daughter TrubiJean and two sons Troy and Trent.

Dick & Lola purchased the Lassle and the Buechler place where they raised sugar beets, corn, pinto beans, alfalfa, malt barley, and wheat. Dick also raised black angus cattle and had a feedlot where he custom fed calves. He served on the Buffalo Rapids Irrigation Board, Fallon Sewer Board, Fallon Fire Department, and the Eastern Montana Pullers Association. Dick retired from farming and ranching in 2007, moved to Miles City and then to Billings in 2019 where he lived until his passing.

Dick enjoyed bowling, boating at Fort Peck where they had a cabin, snowmobiling, watching NASCAR, and playing cards. In later years, he enjoyed traveling to Arizona in their motorhome. He enjoyed watching his son Trent in “Bump n Run” races. Dick loved his grandkids and great grandkids.

Dick was preceded in death by his father John W. and mother Aileen M.; his sister LeAnn; son-in-law Franky Woods; brother-in-law Gary Meidinger; nephew Michael; mother-in-law Nettie Brost; and father-in-law Harry Brost.

Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lola Hess; daughter Trubi Woods of Billings and her children Brayden (Trisha) Stone of Dillon, great grandchildren Tarec and Colson; and Alyssa (Ramsey) Green of Tucson, AZ; son Troy (JoDee) of Baker and their children Conrad, DeeAnna, and Willa; son Trent (Jamie) of Lewistown and children Ty, Whisper, and Lily; brothers David (Diedree) of Brighton, CO, Tim (Karen) of Terry, Ken (Vicki) of Miles City; Tom (Darlene) of Billings; as well as many treasured nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Prairie County Hospital Foundation, Fallon Fire Department, or a charity of one’s choice.

Family will Receive Friends on Monday, April 18, 2022, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday April 19, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. A luncheon will follow at the Riley Center in Miles City.
