In Memory Of

Richard Leroy Rowland age 83 of Lame Deer, MT

October 23, 1930 – September 12, 2014

Richard Leroy Rowland rode into the sunset on September 12, 2014 at his home in Muddy Creek, MT. Richard was born October 23, 1930 at the Rowland Family Homestead in Muddy Creek, MT. His father was Richelieu Benton “Mickey” Rowland and his mother was Mary Ann Schreibeis. He was one of twelve children. Richard started his early education at the Muddy Creek School and then attended Ashland Public School, when he was living at the TP Ranch. He then completed his education at Hardin High School graduating in May 1951. In June of 1951 Richard joined the Army and completed boot camp at Fort Ord, CA. He then joined the 82nd Airborne and attended jump school in Ft. Benning, GA. Upon completion he was sent to Ft. Lee, VA where he completed rigging school and was sent back to Ft. Bragg where he spent the rest of his time in the Service, packing parachutes. On June 17, 1954 Richard received an Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces and was transferred to the Army Reserve. Richard then returned home to Muddy Creek where he went into the logging business and opened a Sawmill and Saw Shop. He loved working in the timber, he was known as “The Bull of the Woods”, and he could out work anybody. Rich was a Jack of All Trades, moving houses and drilling stock wells were just a few. He was a life time farmer and rancher, working sun up to sun down. On June 20, 1958 Richard married the love of his life Patricia Ann Harris-Rowland. Together they had 2 children, Twyla Marie and Monty Ray and 3 grandchildren, Ryhal Rowland, Celesta Rowland, and Monty Rowland Jr.. They also raised three boys, Eldon Foote, Virgil Fisher and Vernon Fisher. Richard enjoyed playing pool and poker, liars dice, polka dancing; telling jokes, hunting, and his most loved was riding the back country of Muddy Creek. His children and grandchildren are: Monty Rowland (Brenda) -Celesta & Monty Rowland Jr and Twyla Rowland-Lessig (Wayne) -Ryhal Rowland. Surviving Brothers and Sisters: Betty, Shirley, Evelyn, Alice, Frank, and Ralph. Richard was preceded in death by his mother, father, and siblings, Helen, Mary Marie, Eva Mae, Mickey, and Robert.
