Richard Elston “Bubbs” Smith, Jr., 25, of Lame Deer, Montana passed away on April 27, 2025. Bubbs was born on June 7, 1999 to Richard and Crystal Smith, Sr. Bubbs grew up on the family ranch in Lame Deer.
In his younger years, Bubbs loved being outdoors, always finding adventure on his own. Whether it was climbing trees, exploring wooded trails, or following the sounds of a nearby creek, he had a natural curiosity that couldn’t be contained. He didn’t need company to enjoy the wild, nature itself was his best friend and greatest teacher.
At a young age, Bubbs often went to rodeos, participating in Barrel Racing, Foot Races, Pole Bending and other events. He also was in the 4-H Club and raised sheep and pigs.
Bubbs attended high school at Lame Deer High School and Northern Cheyenne Tribal Schools, where he graduated in May 2017. During his school years he had a deep passion for sports, especially basketball, football and golf. He could spend hours on the court or out in the field.
Bubbs loved being in the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his friends and family. He spent countless hours at the water’s edge, casting lines, dreaming of one day becoming a Pro Bass Fisherman. Beyond all of that, Bubbs had a presence that couldn’t be ignored – he knew how to light up a room. His energy was infectious and his laugh unforgettable. Bubbs cared deeply for everyone around him, treating them with respect.
Bubbs was a “gamer’. His “gamer“ buddies were Josh, Christian, Donald, Trustin, Wilbur Jr, Wolfgang, Mikal, Aiden, Casey and Noah. His “gamer” names were “Shadow Callsfirst” and “Prime Time” after the little cigars. He wanted to be in PGA Top 100.
Bubbs had a special gift – he could talk Sharley, Jamie and Ricki into anything. No matter the idea big or small, he always knew how to convince them with his charm, humor, and persuasive ways.
He also loved working for his grandpa on the ranch. From a young age, Bubbs took great pride in the hard work and dedication that ranch life required. Bubbs was the kinda kid who didn’t need advice-especially not from Grandpa, because Bubbs knew everything.
Bubbs worked at the Chief Dull Knife College and Charging Horse Casino. Bubbs always brought a smile and helping hand. He enjoyed working with all his co-workers and there was never a dull moment when he was at work. His hard work and kind spirit left a lasting impression.
