July 6, 1950 – August 3, 2025

Rick Newby of Miles City, Montana, passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of August 3, 2025. He was 75 years old.
Born in Miles City on July 6, 1950, Rick was the second child and first son of Stella M. (Glaim) and David Dale Newby. A lifelong resident of Miles City, Rick spent his youth fishing, playing football, racing cars, and participating in Boy Scouts. After graduating from Custer County District High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1970–1973, including an 18-month tour in Vietnam, followed by service at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Upon returning home, Rick dedicated over two decades to law enforcement with the Miles City Police Department (1974–1998), then served with the Custer County Sheriff’s Department as a reservist (1998–2024) and as a pro tem judge.
Rick was a devoted animal lover, passionate outdoorsman, and avid collector. In 2017, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a Corvette. Later in life, his faith deepened, and he found peace as a member of Intersect Bible Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Stella; his siblings Darla Kay and Terrance John; and several cherished dogs.
Rick is survived by his former wives, Roseanne Newby and Terri Schmitz; his children: Jeffrey (Michelle) Newby of Milton-Freewater, OR; Richard (Kristin) Newby of Helena, MT; Candace Newby of Miles City, MT; and Dennis (Ashley) Bohlman of Billings, MT. He is also survived by his grandchildren Carrie Jo, Declan, Aisling, Caitlin, and Roslynn; great-grandson Ryder; sister Christine (Jeff) Gregory; and nieces Kate and Jessica.
Arrangements are under the care of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 8, 2025, at Stevenson & Sons, followed by burial at Eastern Montana State Veterans Cemetery and a luncheon at the VFW.

Dear Jeff, and family, we are so sad to hear about Rick’s passing and our condolences and prayers are with all of you. I’m here today because of Rick. I stopped in Miles city shortly after college and met Rick at the Miles city police department. I spoke with Rick for probably two hours in his office and dropped off a resume’ with him. Three weeks later, I interviewed with the Miles city police and Rick was on the hiring board and later offered the position. I worked for the police department for 26 years . During the early years Rick was my Lt. Detective, then Assistant Chief, and then my Chief. Rick was a good leader and was well respected by the Officers. Had I not met Rick 32 years ago, I probably wouldn’t have settled in Miles city, been married, and have the three Sons I have today. Anyone who knew Rick liked him… He Served this community and our Country from the time he was a young man to the day he passed.. he will be missed by many !

Rick and I were friends long before the police department. We were neighbors in the north side of Miles City and used to play together. When he got on the police department we used to talk about growing up together. Rick and I went to basic police school together.
Rick, you were a good friend and great officer.
My thoughts are with your family.
    Bye old friend.
