Mr. Hickey passed away at 3:33 p.m. on Sunday, December 19th, 2021 at the age of 77.
Robert was born October 23, 1944 to Roland and Frances (Williams) Hickey. Robert went to school in Marmarth, ND, but, if you listened to him, he moved on to the metropolis of Baker, MT in his senior year to graduate at Baker High School. He moved west to California and was a ranch hand before he was drafted and joined the Army. He served in Vietnam from 1965-1967, before being honorably discharged. That service affected him deeply and profoundly. He gave back by (later in life) serving as the local Commander of the American Legion in both Baker and Miles City, to District commander in MT, as well as Commander of the VFW in Miles City.
After his service he moved back to Baker and became a police officer. He married his wife of 47 years, Pamela Nicks, on October 25, 1969. To this union two children were born, Robert and Betty-Jaye. During this time Robert went into business with his father-in-law, Roger Nicks, running and operating the Baker Bus Service. In 1970, he would purchase the business and run it successfully for 32 years.
Due to that fact, almost everyone with the last name Hickey had to have a CDL (just in case). During those years he had a profound and long-lasting impact on generations of local children. After retiring from the Baker Bus Service with 32 years of a perfect safety record, Robert and Pam moved back to his hometown and bought and ran the local gas station in Marmarth, ND. From the time he ran the Bus Service to the convenience store, he maintained the Marmarth graveyard. In his words, “Someone had to do it.”
After a while, they sold the business and moved to St. Cloud, MN, so they could be close to their daughter. Ever the man to back his family, a year later they moved down south to work with his son Robert and his nephew Roger Hickey who were working as storm contractors. Eventually, Robert and Pam moved to Miles City, MT. Robert spent 5 years working at Jefferson Lines. The Billings Gazette would be dad’s final job.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Pamela; his parents Roland and Frances; three brothers Dell, Whitey, and Red; and sister Roberta Rost.
He is survived by his son Robert Hickey II; his daughter Betty-Jaye (Kally) Kosbab; his grandchildren Destiny and Damien Kosbab; his two sisters Romona Lowe and Jacqualine (Darrel) Rost; and brother David (Terry) Hickey and numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert Delaine Hickey was a man of principles; there was never any question where you stood with him – or where he stood with you. No matter what side you were on, there is no doubt that he will be missed now that he is no longer standing. God Bless and Happy Trails Sir.

Delane fits the saying “all gave some, SOME GAVE ALL” . He fit the latter, as a person, a husband, a dad, he gave all. Rest in peace, Delane. deb & Danny

I knew Dalaine as a child in Marmarth along with his brother Gene (Pee Wee). We played together all over Marmarth. My brother John hung out with his older brothers Whitey and Red. R.I.P. ol’ friend.

Delaine and Pam were such great dancers, so much fun to watch on the dance floor and they sure enjoyed good live music. When I was in high school, Delaine was not only our driver, but a true sports fan. I always appreciated his positive support from the stands. Thank you for getting us home from all those games safe and sound, RIP Delaine. I hope your family finds comfort knowing that you are enjoying a waltz with Pam again.

We will miss you Delaine, but I know God knew you were ready for some rest. I myself, felt very blessed to have married into the family that had you and Pam as an Uncle and Aunt to my Rick. So very blessed to have known you for over 32 years. Always enjoyed the gettogethers over the years. Holidays, Birthday’s, Reunions, Graduations, Dances at the Eagles or VFW, especially the Reception at our wedding in October of ‘1989’. I will really miss you, and I hope you knew how much I loved you, and how much I still love you. I know that where you are right now, you are no longer in any pain, and I believe you are with loved ones again who went on before you. I believe you are with Pam again, encircled in the loving arms of our God, singing with the angels. RIP. Love Avis and family
