Robert Huber, age 75, died on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at his home in Gillette of natural causes.
Robert Gene Huber, affectionately known to his family and friends as Gunners, was born on August 23, 1929 to William Juan and Laura (Anderson) Huber in Omaha, Nebraska. He was raised and educated in Nebraska. A highlight of his high school career was playing on the football team. After high school, he followed his fathers example and entered in the United States service, enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He spent 30 to 35 years in the military as a Gunnery Sergeant serving his country and earned numerous medals and commendations for his exemplary service and bravery. At the end of WWII, he served in the pacific theatre including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. For his service in Korea and Vietnam he and his Marine Division received Presidential Unit Citations with two bronze stars for their extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces, commending their courage, resourcefulness and aggressive fighting spirit. Robert received many other distinguished commendations and medals throughout his military career. He was very proud that he was able to serve his country, which he did with excellence.
After his Honorable Discharge in 1970, Robert moved to Gillette to live and work on the Emigh Ranch, which his aunt had previously owned. H e frequently visited and spent time working on the ranch until the time his illness prevented him from doing so. Robert enjoyed many hobbies. He was an accomplished painter and spent many hours creating wonderful and personal works of art. Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid cribbage player. He held a great interest in horses and a large knowledge of world history. Robert loved to tell a good story, would never turn down the chance to have a good argument or miss the opportunity to share a kindhearted tease. He held a great fondness for DeeDee and Sally Jo and became like their adopted father. Robert was a member of several notable organizations; the American Legion, the VFW, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge.
Robert is survived by his special friends and caregivers, Sally Schofield and Karen Murphy both of Gillette, WY; brothers, Stanley Huber and Allan Huber; three nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William R. Huber.
Funeral Services for Robert Gunners Huber of Gillette will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday November 6, 2003 at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette, Wyoming Interment will follow at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette, Wyoming with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post # 42. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.
In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit the American Legion Post 42 or the Heptner Oncology Unit at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital.
