Robert (Bob) Ray Lamb, a long time resident of Miles City, passed away on January 11, 2011 at the Holy Rosary Healthcare.
Bob, the 7th of 10 children, was born on July 7, 1923, to Robert Ray and Flossie A. (Sherwin) Lamb in Ollie, Montana. He attended school in Rosebud, Montana. He joined the Montana Highway Department in January of 1942 starting in the construction department. The country was at war and he was inducted into the U.S. Navy on January 27, 1943, doing his basic training in Farragut, Idaho, attending Storekeeper School. Following school Bob was stationed at Seattle, Washington; Port Hueneme, California; and Bremerton, Washington. After his honorable discharge in March of 1946, he returned Miles City and resumed work at the highway department, retiring in 1985 as a District Maintenance Supervisor. Following retirement he spent many hours as a handyman and ranch hand at the McRae Ranch anticipating work to be done before anyone else noticed. He married Rosie A. Valach on September 20, 1943, in Miles City and since 1946 has lived in Miles City. During the forties he became interested in collecting license plates and has been known for his extensive collection of plates. He was a member of the American License Plate Collector Association (ALPCA) and the state associations of Wyoming, Nevada, and Montana. He also enjoyed fishing, Sunday drives, and playing cards. Being a member of the Miles City #537 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for 63 years, he served as Exalted Ruler in 1962-63 and as a District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler (2 times) for Montana Southeast. He was a 66 year member of the American Legion. He had a great faith in God and was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as greeter and usher for many years.
Bob was the very definition of a good neighbor raising the neighborhood children and was willing to help in any way when requested or simply needed. It was a joy for him to meet people and engage in conversation especially about people and history of this area. His dogs Boots and Fritz were his constant companions.
Rosie preceded him in death on July 14, 1991 as did his parents and companion Agnes Mickus. He is survived by his daughter Nancy (Wayne Leroy) Pierce-Rogowski of Las Vegas, Nevada; one sister, Gehn Hoyt of Laurel, Montana; a sister-in-law, Mildred (John) Valach of Miles City; a special friend, Joyce Haughawout of Miles City; and his extended Miles City family of Linda (Mickus) Hodgson; Dawn and Autumn Heibner, and Kaitlyn Shockley; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge the doctors, nurses and staff at the Holy Rosary Healthcare for their kindness and compassion for Bob during his hospitalization.
