Martin McVeigh says
I’m reading the WWII letters of my father, Martin Allen McVeigh. In a letter dated May 4, 1945 he says “one of my best friends on board is going back to the states one of these days. Bob Perkins Rdm 2/c. ” That’s radioman 2nd class. I think they were both in the radio room on the USS Straus — a Destroyer Escort — in the Pacific at the time. Both from “The Greatest Generation”. Al McVeigh passed away in 2001. His five kids remember him fondly, and now that I’m glad Al McVeigh made a good friend in Bob Perkins.
