Roberta R. WhistlingElk, age 61, of Lame Deer, MT passed away on Monday, November 9, 2009 at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings.
Roberta was born March 1, 1948, the daughter of Joseph Big Medicine and Emma Jean Blackbear in Watonga, Oklahoma. She attended grade school in Maskogee, OK and Jr. High School in Maskogee and Alice Robinson Jr. High School. She graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, OK. After high school she worked for the Army National Guard as a secretary. Following she moved to Lame Deer where she became a homemaker.She was united in marriage to Johnny WhistlingElk in 1978 at the St. Labre Mission by Father Pascal. She worked for C&A Tribes Housing Project. Roberta was a member of the Catholic Church and was a Sundance Ceremonial Woman.She enjoyed beading, hand games, bingo and liked taking drives in the hills with her grandchildren. Mom, you were the rock in our family (even when dad was alive). You raised us. Im sorry you had to do this by yourself. I think thats what made you so solid as a rock but yet mom you were gentle and compassionate. You taught me/us a lot about life, how to survive, how to live, how to give and most of all how to love. Mom, Im so happy youre not in pain anymore. Youre healed now. Mom, we love you 4-ever. We will see you later.. in Paradise
She is preceded in death by her husband Johnny WhistlingElk, her parents, Joe Big Medicine, Sr. and Emma Jean Big Medicine, children, Shely and Riva Whistling Elk, and twin boys, granddaughter, Lyric Good Bear, great grandson, John Joseph Whistling Elk, brother, Anthony Wolfrain, sister, Rita (Bee) Beehan, uncle, B-Low Beehan, aunt, Roberta Black, nieces, Rikki and Tara Big MedicineRoberta is survived by her son, Joseph W. Big Medicine Sr. (Dawna), daughters, Jackie Whistling Elk (Valdo) Renee Whistling Elk and Jessica Whistling Elk, grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Johnny, Emmitt, and Johnna Big Medicine, Reneka Walks Nice, Beth Harris, Jaylyn, Byron, and Ashley Whistling Elk, Anthony, Chris, Tyrell Youngbear, and Sharolyn and Kalo Hill. brother, Joe Big Medicine, Sr., sister, Rita Big Medicine, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunties, grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. All of the Whistling Elks, Big Medicines, and Black Bears.

Sorry for your loss. I discovered this site while trying to find information about an Emma Jean Big Medicine who might have passed away in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. She was a doll maker and used beads alot. Maybe she is actually the mother of Jacki.
I thought she lived in Colorado but could be wrong.
If anyone reading this can help me, I would appriciate it.
